Hi, I’m Bill.

My big sister Donna is fighting cancer with everything she has — and I’m doing everything I can to fight alongside her. But right now, our biggest obstacle isn’t the chemo — it’s the stairs. Donna has a colostomy and needs daily access to a shower upstairs. We don’t have one downstairs. So twice a day, my husband and I — both in our 60s — carry her up and down the stairs. It’s painful, unsafe, and unsustainable. She’s too weak to walk, and we’re too old to keep lifting. She deserves so much better than this. We’re raising money for a stair lift so Donna can move around her home safely and with dignity. Medicare won’t cover it, and the cost is far more than we can afford on our own. She loves our backyard — the fresh air, the trees, the birds. I know she’d be downstairs more if she didn’t have to dread the next trip back up. Any funds raised beyond the stair lift will help cover ongoing care needs. I go to every oncology appointment with her — I’ve used up all my family leave and sick days, and my vacation time is almost gone. She relies on me for everything from interpreting medical jargon to just having someone by her side who loves her deeply.

 This journey has been brutal. But Donna is still hopeful. She’s scheduled for chemo through September. She wants to fight — and I want to make sure she can do that without the added trauma of struggling inside her own home.
