I am an Abolitionist! We are Abolitionists!

In June 2016, 14 boys and 2 girls, ages 10-16, were rescued from SLAVERY in Ghana, West Africa, by Abolish Slavery Now and its African NGO-partners.

Abolish Slavery Now is part of the emerging “Underground Railroad” committed to freeing enslaved children and ending this ancient evil in our time. We support the railroad; we are rescuers. We do not give money to slaveholders!

We are raising money to fund the next rescue scheduled for this fall.

Each child rescued in June had been sold or re-sold to their “master” for less than the price of a goat. Forced into long, dangerous work on canoe-like fishing boats, they were disposable commodities, throw-away children working on the world’s largest man-made lake, Lake Volta. If not freed, these 16 children probably would have died unsnagging nets, from untreated infections or malnutrition, or trying to escape.

So, what's it take to rescue a child slave?  Together, we will fund the following over a 3-4 month period:

+ Advance scouts identify the children as likely enslaved.
+ Investigators gather info about the children.
+ Families are found and interviewed.
+ Local police and child welfare services are enlisted.
+The rescue team is provisioned for a week on Lake Volta 
+ The rescue boat is launched an the children searched out among the fishing pongas.
+ Once found, the children are liberated, transferred to the rescue boat and taken to a safe house far away from their masters.


What happens to the children after we free them from slavery?

After the rescue operation, others will step in, again working with our African NGO partner, to provide for medical, pyschological and spiritual trauma care at the safe house.  A month later the children will be placed in a special  boarding school for 6-18 months, preparing for each child’s reintegration to his or her family, village or another safe place.
