Help Asma and Abdelrahman Survive in Gaza

My name is Chloe and I'm a historian of the Middle East based between the US and Canada. A friend in Jerusalem put me in touch with Asma, whom she has known for several years. Asma is a single mother living in Gaza with her 6-year-old son, Abdelrahman. When we started the fundraiser last year, the hope was to support their escape, but for now it remains impossible. At Asma's request, funds raised are going toward basic food and shelter so she and her son Abdelrahman can survive.

Asma describes her current living situation as follows:

"I'm in a completely unenviable situation. I don't have a home I can feel at ease or have the least bit of personal dignity. My son and I are living in a tent and prices are extremely high, to the point that I can't buy any fresh fruits and vegetables for my son. Even the markets lack life's basic necessities, and what is there costs a crazy amount. There is no education available. I can't live life or care for my basic needs."

For much of the current war, the conditions in Gaza made it very difficult for Asma to access the funds I had transferred to her, as she did not have a bank account and wire services like Western Union were operating extremely intermittently. During the most recent ceasefire in March 2025, Asma was finally able to open a bank account in her own name, set up transfers via a local cash app, and receive funds much faster. Your continued support goes directly toward helping her and her family survive in these unimaginably hellish conditions.*

Here is the original text Asma wrote about her situation when we started this fundraiser in spring 2024:

"We are currently in Rafah after being displaced from the Shati Refugee Camp. My current situation is very bad because we have lost our home. We have no money for anything. I am dependent on my family but can't even fulfill my son's most basic needs. I am a college graduate, but have no chance of working here, or of supporting myself or my son. My son was supposed to start school, but he has not been able to. Our lives, our hopes, and our dreams are gone."

There is no safe place left in Gaza and disease is rampant. The money raised for Asma and Abdelrahman will go directly to securing their escape from this dire situation. Eighty percent of funds will go to the evacuation fees and twenty percent to helping them establish a life in Egypt once they arrive.

كتبت أسماء النص التالي في بداية مايو\آيار ٢٠٢٥

"أنا حاليا في وضع لا احسد عليه بتاتا لانو مافي الي بيت ارتاح فيه وامارس اقل الحقوق الشخصية ولا حتى عارفة ارتاح انا وابني قاعدة بخيمة والاسعار غالية جدا لدرجة انو مش قادرة اجيب لابني بعض الخضار ولا الفواكه البسيطة مافي حتى بالاسواق اي مقومات حياة او مواد خام والمتوفر "باسعار عالية جدا والتعليم كمان غير متوفر انا مش قادرة اخد راحتي بحياتي بأموري الشخصية

فكتبت أسماء في بداية حملة التبرعات في ربيع ٢٠٢٤:

“موقعي الحالي رفح ونزحت من الشاطئ. وضعي حاليا سيء جدا لانو قاعدين مكان غير مكانا وما معي فلوس لأي شيء. معتمدة على أهلي ومش قادرة ألبي أقل احتياجات لابني. وأنا خريجة جامعة ومش قادرة أشتغل بالبلد هاي ولا قادرة أعمل اشي لنفسي أو لابني. راحت حياتنا وأمالنا وأحلامنا وراح على ابني دراسة صف أول.”

لا يوجد مكانا آمنا في غزة. الظروف غير آمنة وغير صحية. سوف يتم تخصيص كل التبرعات لمساعدة أسماء وابنها في الخروج من هذه الظروف العصيبة. من المتوقع أن نخصّص ٨٠ في المائة من التبرعات لمصاريف الإجلاء إلى مصر وبقيتها لتأسيس حياة جديدة فيما بعد.
