Asking for help for my Ugandan family.

Hello, family and friends,

With all the darkness that is going on in the world currently it is hard for me to reach out to ask for help as I know there are so many other things that people might feel compelled to donate to; however, I am without any other options financially and I appreciate your consideration.

As many of you know, I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Uganda from 2012-2013. During my time there, I became very close with many people in the community I was living in. Without expecting it I gained one of the greatest friendships with a person I now consider family. Many people might not be aware of the current political situation in Uganda, but the country is in complete turmoil. Yoweri Museveni has been in office as president since 1986 and despite Uganda being considered a democratic republic, he has ruled as a dictator since gaining his position. Over the last several years, a new political group called NUP (National Unity Platform) was created by singer, activist and presidential candidate, Bobi Wine. This group has brought so much hope for change to those effected the most by Museveni's reign. Recently, the Ugandan government has been given instruction to try and put an end to any political action put forth by NUP. This has resulted in many people associated with NUP to be arrested, detained, beaten and killed. Many people have just abruptly gone missing without any of their family or friends to know of their whereabouts or even if they are still alive.

I am reaching out to you to ask for help for my friend (my family) that became a member of NUP in order to better the future of their country. They are currently fleeing their home as many of the people they were working with have been apart of those that have gone missing. They have found a means to seek refuge and asylum in another country; however, they financially have no means to pay for the costs to get there. Without seeking asylum, they will likely be arrested, detained, beaten and potentially murdered. Due to the severity of the situation, I am not able to reveal any identifying details on this page, but I would be happy to discuss in a private chat through social media, email or by phone. All of the funds donated will be going directly to them in order to cover the costs of fleeing Uganda. Any remaining funds would be donated to their family who does not have any form of income at this time. We are greatly appreciative in your consideration to help save my friend's life!

If you are interested in further understanding the political situation in Uganda, please watch this documentary that was created by another one of my Ugandan friends. He is also currently seeking asylum.
