A devoted family man, Donny Letson was involved in a life threatening car accident on the morning of March 18th in his hometown of Hartselle, AL. He was subsequently airlifted by helicopter to the Huntsville Hospital in North Alabama for immediate life-saving medical care to address multiple brain bleeds, neck injuries, a collapsed lung, as well as broken ribs, hip, knee, leg and a shattered jaw and cheekbone. Within a week after the accident, Donny underwent 5 major invasive surgeries to mend and correct these issues. Including a replacement hip, pins for his left knee, installing a tracheotomy tube, and reconstructive plastic surgery to his face and jaw which involved wiring his mouth shut for multiple months. Doctors also indicate he will require at least 8 months of rehab and physical therapy to achieve a full recovery.
As of April he is showing signs of awareness of his surroundings and has been able to stand up and take several steps with assistance, which are excellent signs. He has also showcased his ability to form words and sentences on a alphabet reference sheet in order to express his own thoughts again since he is temporarily unable to speak. However, he still has a very long way to go. We anticipate that all major surgeries are behind him now and his body can begin to focus on regaining his strength and abilities as before.
No one anticipates something like this to happen to them. Donny loves his job repairing medical equipment and the travel involved in providing that service across the Southeast. He brings a happy face and energetic attitude everywhere he goes, from Florida to Illinois. Little did he know that one day the very equipment he services would save his own life.
Donny's extended lack of employment after his accident will bring additional stress to him and his family in this already difficult time. He was also uninsured and in the process of searching for a new health care policy at the time of his accident, which leaves him and his family fully accountable for all bills received. But we know that through faith we can find unexpected solutions.
We look forward to seeing him return to work and back doing the things he loves most - camping, traveling, the occasional session on his drum set, and spending time with his loving family.
We have created a GoFundMe if you would like to donate to Donny's recovery fund.
Thank you for your generous donations, thoughts, and prayers.
