My name is Toni, I am sharing my nephew's story and the family of Asher Reid is asking for your help.
Just one month ago, Asher was a busy boy running and playing with his older brother, sister, and dad in rural Oklahoma without a care in the world. Three hospitalizations later, and Asher is now in the ICU with a serious form of meningitis and encephalitis. He has severe swelling to the brain and optic nerves.
With this rare, severe infection, he is on several powerful drugs. He is recovering from a coma and respiratory failure. We know Asher can make a full recovery and get back to being an amazing little brother but this illness can be devastating and healing often takes a very long time.
Asher lives in rural Oklahoma. His dad, James, is a single father raising three children while working as a farm hand. He is struggling between staying at the hospital with Asher and working to support his children. Kylie and Jace are missing their little brother immensely and struggling with James being away from the home. With the help of their grandparents, they are coping with this crisis.
The road to recovery is going to be very long and expensive for Asher. His therapy now consists of ICU level care, powerful IV drugs multiple times a day, and several specialists, along with continued CAT scans to identify the process of the brain swelling.
James was born and raised in Cushing Oklahoma. He himself suffered a life altering ATV accident several years ago which resulted in multiple fractures to his back. After rolling the 4 wheeler, he got up and turned it over and road it to the truck with his daughter before going into town for medical care where he was Medi-flighted to a trauma center. James has always tried to be there for his three young children. This last month has left him overwhelmed with concern for Asher as well as Jace and Kylie.
When he gets home, Asher will need around the clock care, intense therapy, and multiple follow-up appointments, James will likely need to take a leave of absence from his job. The costs are already beginning to pile up with the travel fees to and from their small town to Oklahoma City.
