ASIA SOCIETY MUTUAL AID FUND

Donation protected
The Asia Society Mutual Aid Fund has been established to show our solidarity with and to support our colleagues and friends who are no longer at the Asia Society, have been furloughed, or have seen their hours reduced as of Sept. 4.

In these anxious times, with the Covid-19 pandemic still a danger, the unanticipated and sudden loss of income and benefits such as health insurance is an incredible burden. Though budgetary cuts may have been necessary during this uncertain time, the Asia Society community does not take these decisions lightly. We stand with you!

We are a family and family takes care of each other.  So we are asking the broader Asia Society community to show your love and support to those who were affected by the recent cuts in staffing, including layoffs, furloughs and change in their employment status.

Now more than ever, we need to come through and show them that their years of service to the Asia Society were not in vain. We invite you to join us in this effort by making a donation today in any amount you can. Your donations will be distributed to workers who have lost their jobs, been furloughed, or transitioned to part-time due to the current economic dislocation. Our goal is to raise at least $100,000 for our colleagues. Your active participation will be instrumental in making this campaign a roaring success.

Those who were impacted and would like to receive funding, please submit your request at this link. The Asia Society Mutual Aid Fund is committed to distributing a portion of the collected funds to every eligible request that is submitted over the next month. Donations will be collected into an account established solely for the Asia Society Mutual Aid. In collaboration with our colleagues in Human Resources, we will insure that payments are distributed to the recipients via Venmo or PayPal, though alternate arrangements may be made as needed. If you are not able to submit the form or have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the organizers through the Contact button below.

The Asia Society Mutual Aid Fund is an employee-organized, volunteer group.

Thank you.

Where will our donations go?

At this time we are hoping to offer a minimum of $1,000 to affected colleagues to help pay for medical expenses, bills, and support their families etc. If additional funds are raised, we will provide additional grants based on the total raised, divided equally between recipients.

How do you decide who gets help?

We will have secure online form for affected staff to indicate their interest in the fund. The link to the form is included above and will also be shared directly with those affected by the Human Resources staff of Asia Society, so that any person who has lost their job, been furloughed or had a change of working status, will have the ability to apply and access funds. We are trying to ensure everyone gets the help they need, while also respecting our colleagues privacy.

How do you withdraw and distribute the money?

We are withdrawing the money into a dedicated account that has been established specifically for this purpose. We will be sending funds electronically via third-party money transfer apps like Venmo and PayPal, and as needed, paper check. Throughout the process, we will maintain records of all transactions for accounting and audit purposes.

What will you do with leftover funds?

All funds raised will be distributed to our affected colleagues.

Who you are and where you’re from?

We are a volunteer team drawn from multiple departments at the Asia Society who want to help our colleagues during this difficult time. We are based in New York City.

What is your relationship or contact to the parties you are raising funds for?
We are friends and long-time colleagues with the people we are raising funds for.
