Help Missy and Her Kids Find a Safe Home

We are reaching out for support for my sister, Missy, a hardworking single mom of two, who has dedicated her life to helping others. She works full-time at a local school, part-time at the hospital, and runs her own small business, Crafted By Kaye. Despite all of her efforts, she has recently found herself in an impossible situation—homeless due to an irresponsible and negligent landlord.

Missy moved into her home last fall and has faced constant issues ever since. The landlord continuously ignored or half-fixed necessary repairs, putting her and her children in danger. The worst of these issues came when Missy discovered a carbon monoxide leak. They were coming from the oven, the furnace, and the hot water tank. Luckily, Missy's CO₂ detector alerted her to the leak, or they could have died due to not being able to smell carbon monoxide.

The gas company shut off the oven, furnace and hot water tank for safety reasons, they required that a certified professional make the repairs. Instead, the landlord came to the residence himself and covered the leaks with duct tape and threw the stove outside. The gas company returned and discovered this, they shut them off two more times, warning that if they had to return a fourth time, it would be shut off completely.

Rather than take responsibility, the landlord began threatening to evict her. He stated that he didn’t have time to deal with the issue because he was on vacation and insisted that, since the outdoor temperatures wouldn’t be freezing, they would be fine without gas. He also told Missy that he had no intention of restoring the gas or hot water tank, effectively forcing her out of the house without an official eviction notice.

Since the gas has been shut off, the internal temperature of the home has dropped to 38º, putting Missy’s kids and her 2 cats at risk. Instead of making repairs, the landlord has taken things even further—he threw out her stove and told her she had to buy a new one, mocked her Christian faith, and threatened that if the pipes freeze, she will be financially responsible for any repairs.

It’s been seven days since they’ve slept in their home, and Missy and her kids have nowhere to live. They have been bouncing between friends and family, unable to shower, cook meals, or have a place of their own. The stress of this situation has been overwhelming, and they desperately need stability. We are raising the funds to help cover the cost of a security deposit and moving expenses so Missy and her children can find a safe home as soon as possible.

My sister graduated with honors in college, and for someone who works three jobs, she should not be homeless. It’s crazy how fast life can change in an instant.

Any amount, big or small, will help get them back on their feet. If you can't donate, please share this fundraiser to help spread the word. Thank you for your kindness and support in helping Missy and her children find the safe home they deserve.
