Ashlyn's Hope: Journey to Boston

I am launching this Go Fund Me campaign on behalf of the daughter of Will and Lisa Thomas, Ashlyn Thomas. Ashlyn is a 14-year-old 8th grade student, attending Monteleone Junior High, who also serves as an officer in the BETA club at her school. Although, you may see a smiling face on the exterior, Ashlyn’s health has been on a steady decline in the recent months. Her health battles began at birth, diagnosed with Spina Bifida Occulta with a tethered spinal cord. Her first surgery occurred at 4 months old and her second surgery at the age of 10 to untether her spinal cord. Ashlyn bounced back from those surgeries relatively quick, getting back to her favorite hobby, softball! However, since her third surgery on May 30, 2016, she has been debilitated with immobility, lack of sensation in her feet, poor circulation in her calves, and severe back pain.
This downward spiral has led Ashlyn’s family to seek help at Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH), world renowned for excellence in pediatric care. After a recent trip to Boston, it was revealed that Ashlyn is experiencing continual nerve damage and inflammation in her back, along with permanent limited mobility. Dr. Warf, neurologist at BCH, will be performing surgery on Ashlyn May 23, 2017 in confident hopes of relieving some of the pain. Following recovery of the surgery, Ashlyn has other medical complications that need to be addressed, such as bladder dysfunction and orthopedic equipment for her legs.
The Thomas family will have extended stays in Boston over the next several months to regain the best quality of life that Ashlyn deserves. Travel expenses, housing, and out of pocket medical expenses will be costly due to receiving care out of state and the extensive recovery and complexity of the surgery.
