On September 4, we found out that Ashley had experienced a medical emergency in the middle of the night. She had been living in Las Vegas with Christina's Dad, Allen for the past couple of months. After we had a little time to investigate, we were able to figure out that she had spoken with a friend over video chat at 11:15-ish that evening. In that call she complained of fatigue and headache. Allen got home around midnight and thought that Ashley was sleeping. After a little bit of time he tried to wake her up and wasn't able to. He tried a little harder and finally decided to call EMS and start CPR. When EMS finally got to their apartment, she did not have a pulse. They worked on her for a while and were able to get a pulse and headed to the nearest hospital. While in the ER, her heart stopped again and they were able to start it for a second time. When the ER Physician called, he stated that she was without oxygen for long enough that he would give her a 1-5% chance of pulling through. He also stated that because of the Pandemic they had also tested her for COVID-19. With all of Ashley's family living in Kansas, we had to quickly get plane tickets on a holiday weekend to get her Mom, Dad, Brother, Grandmother and Aunt out to Las Vegas. A couple hours before they got on the plane we found out that she had tested positive for COVID-19. We all knew that this meant that it was very unlikely that anyone would be allowed at her bedside while she was fighting for her life. Her wonderful nurses helped Ashley's parents and daughter Facetime with her since they couldn't be with her. After additional testing, it became clear that Ashley was being called home. Christie, Ashley's mom, had to really wear down the staff to be allowed to enter the hospital and stand outside of Ashley's room and look in on her. She was able to spend time outside her room with her before she finally passed away on September 6, 2020.
I think a parent is never ready to bury a 29 year old child. We are asking for help with funeral expenses and with the travel expenses that had to hurriedly be spend to get family to her in Las Vegas.
