Hi there, my name is Warren.
This September 5th 2020, I'll be embarking upon an 8 day trek to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in support of the World Wildlife Fund. This is an expedition organised by Choose a Challenge and will involve climbing Africa's tallest mountain to an altitude of 5,895 meters above sea level. One day alone will involve a 16-18 hour hike, while I endure sub-zero temperatures and oxygen-deprived air. Kilimanjaro is also the tallest freestanding peak in the world.
Mt. Kilimanjaro in all its glory (elephant for scale):
As I mentioned, I'll be undertaking this mammoth challenge in aid of WWF. They are the world's leading independent conservation organisation with a mission of conserving nature and reducing the most pressing threats to the diversity of life on Earth. Growing up watching documentaries such as David Attenborough's Planet Earth, I developed an early love for the natural world and being immersed within it. At the same time, these programs highlighted the delicate nature of the environment and the organisms living within it.
The six key areas WWF focuses their efforts on:
This year I wanted to undertake something which would push me out of my comfort zone and really test who I am and what I’m capable of. As such, I decided upon this challenge, putting myself on the line for a cause I truly care about.
I won't be alone in my efforts however. Alongside me will be my brother, travel companion, and pillar of support, Tyron. He will be taking on the same challenge and will be raising vital funds for the Arthritis Foundation , check out his page here .
My brother Tyron and I enjoying the beautiful west coast of Ireland:
In order to make this journey possible, some of the money raised will be used to cover the inherent travel costs. Up to the fundraising goal of 4,500, half of the money raised will be given to charity with the other half covering flights etc. Every cent above the target will be given in full to WWF.
To see some of the tremendous work WWF undertake, you can follow this link .
I really hope you consider donating to make this venture a reality and to help preserve our wonderful world. I would also greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word about my challenge!
A hike around Glendalough:
Many thanks,
Warren.
