Medical Bills & Prosthetic Leg
Donation protected
On February 2014, my left foot was amputated due to blood clotting. Approximately 7-8 weeks prior, Doctor's and Specialists were trying to figure out what was going on with my foot. Almost 8 weeks later, an MRI revealed that there were blood clots in my foot, and I was immediately sent to emergency. After 7 angiograms, 1 angioplast, and an arterial bypass, the doctor gave me the news that the attempts to save my foot were unsuccessful, and he would need to amputate my left leg below the knee. Thankful to be alive, I was left with the thought of when, how, or if I was going to be able to return to work and support my family. I've worked for CA Dept. of Corrections since 1998 (Salinas Valley State Prison), and a Parole Agent (San Jose) since 2002. Luckily for me, I had nearly 2000 hours of leave/sick/vacation/furlough credits/non-industrial disability, and I was confident that I would be returning to work no more than 4 months following my amputation. Unfortunately, my residual limb became infected, and I was told by my doctor that I would possibly need a 2nd amputation, but this time, above the knee. I walked away from my local doctor, and I was referred to a team of specialists' at St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco. Thankfully, this "All-star" team of doctors were able to save the affected area, making the necessary revisions. This proved to be mentally, and physically challenging. Following my final revision in December 2014, I was finally able to begin the process of moving forward. On May 14th, 2015, I was contacted by my Administrator, and advised that I was clear to return to work! The aftermath since February 2014 has been left with much support from my family, friends, and a few fundraisers along the way. I even managed to continue DJ'ing (on one leg), and pay off some of the debt that I still owe. I've always been that guy to help others, volunteer, or help my partners (donate state hours) whenever possible, and without hesitation. I was asked to open a "GoFundMe" account last year; however, I refused. I sit here writing this, swallowing my pride, and now being the one who needs financial assistance to regain stability. I was amazed after taking a look at my medical bills, and the overall cost of a prosthetic leg. My goal has been to return to work so I can support my family, continue to serve the public, and maintain myself as a productive member of society. Thank You to all my family, friends, co-workers, my correctional family throughout the state and the country. I'd like to also thank the California Dept. of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Division of Adult Parole Operations, the California Correctional Peace Officers Association, Correctional Peace Officer's Foundation, San Jose Parole Unit, The Care Foundation, Salinas Valley State Prison, Correctional Training Facility (Soledad), California State Prison Sacramento (New Folsom), San Francisco Police Department, The Fallen Officers Foundation of Santa Cruz County, Hanger Clinic (Salinas) and my home community of Castroville. Most of us will experience tough challenges during our lives. Some will experience loss, abuse, poverty, hunger, mental, physical etc...but we must find a way to adapt to these challenges, and continue to press forward. Thank you for taking the time to read my brief story.
