Arturo, the owner of Cinco De Mayo (located at 2428 Lemoine Ave) in Fort Lee, New Jersey for the past 18 years, was an outstanding father of four kids, husband, and a beloved resident of the Fort Lee community. He left an everlasting impression on many in the Bergen, Hudson, Union, and Essex county areas, in Mexico, and around the world.
Arturo had such a big heart and a unique way to make everyone he came into contact with feel special. He was the type of person that would offer the shirt off his back to a stranger. Customers would confide in him as if he was a therapist because he was a great listener and comforter. He was humble, never complained or asked for favors.
He donated food from his restaurant to the less fortunate every week even when sales were down and never said a word about it to anyone. He was truly an angel on earth and now an angel in heaven.
His children want to mirror his attitudes and practices. They believe it was an honor and privilege for them to stand behind such an amazing man. Arturo was a modest, respectful, sophisticated, confident, knowledgeable, brilliant, and a true gentleman. He was also very funny, and a wonderful performer and host to all who visited Cinco De Mayo Mexican Grill in Fort Lee, New Jersey.
Why Arturo and his family are so deserving of financial help
While his main objective was to provide for his family with a home and get his kids through college to give them the best life possible, he also loved feeding and nurturing Fort Lee residents and surrounding communities. It was a spiritual calling for him. He was in the ministry of making people happy with the food, laughter, and great stories.
For 18 years; a real milestone for any restaurant; Arturo's Cinco De Mayo became a favorite local destination for lunch and dinner. Fort Lee schools, police and fire departments, local government, media companies (including CNBC and Telemundo), and employees of local businesses ate or ordered out from his friendly eatery.
Countless birthday parties, weddings, religious events, reunions, school events, youth sports, corporate functions, 5K fundraisers, and many more types of celebrations were catered or supported by Cinco De Mayo. Many invited Arturo and his family to their homes to celebrate future family functions because of the close and personal connections he made with people of all backgrounds.
Cooking and Feeding Through COVID-19
When COVID-19 devasted the NJ area, many eateries closed, but Cinco De Mayo stayed open. When sales dropped significantly, Arturo insisted on staying open to feed the community while taking all safety precautions and following CDC protocol to keep everyone safe. And when mass transportation halted due to the virus, Arturo's wife and their driving-aged kids drove the employees home at the end of the day.
What is the main obstacle?
Due to the fact, Arturo was suffering from organ failure and was transferred to three local hospitals before he passed, he has accumulated exorbitant medical expenses after spending the last two months in intensive care.
Arturo was not only the "face" of the restaurant he also micromanaged the day to day operations and finances. While he attempted to shield his family from the financial stresses and burdens of the restaurant, it became very clear to his family once they took over that the restaurant was in financial trouble especially after COVID-19. While the business has picked up again recently, there were days (not too long ago) when only four meals were sold the entire day. But they push on.
When do they need the funds?
The Arturo Andrew family needs your help right away. After falling behind in the restaurant's rent, utilities, and other expenses, they don't even have enough to cover Arturo's burial expenses. As devout Catholics, they want to honor his wishes and at least provide a respectful burial. My name is Max Almenas. I am a longtime resident of Fort Lee (30 years) and an old friend of the Andrew family. I was Director of Religious Education at Madonna Church and race director for Madonna 5K (now Fort Lee Unity 5K). Many years ago, Arturo helped me when my business venture failed and I fell through hard times. I offered to wait tables, take phone orders, and deliver food for Cinco de Mayo. But Arturo also wanted help promoting his business. So I designed a website, set up his social media marketing, and produced images to show the world why Cinco De Mayo was (and is) an incredible and authentic Mexican eatery. In essence, he gave me my first break in marketing.
With his blessing, I went on to work at other companies and non-profits always rising up the ladder, and today, thanks to Arturo, I'm the marketing manager for Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark, producing and designing marketing and advertising content to spread the Good Word.
The life my wife, son, and I are blessed with today would not be possible without Arturo's generous heart. What's incredible is that he helped many more people. And there are many stories like mine.
