Art of the Americas Exhibit byLicia

I am a doctoral student at UMKC and a member of the board of directors of the not-for-profit Pan-American Association of Kansas City . I am curating an exhibition of works of art from the Art Museum of the Americas , (AMA) located in Washington, DC, and affiliated with the Organization of American States  (OAS).

The exhibition is tentatively titled America’s People and their Cultures: Art of the Americas and Cultural Relativism in the Western Hemisphere. The exhibition will include one work of art from each of the countries of the Americas represented in the collection of the AMA, and possibly a few additional pieces from local sources to fill in for those countries whose art is not represented in the AMA collection.

Kansas City is located in the heart of the United States and is a primary international trade zone. However, how many of us have cultural knowledge of the other countries in our hemisphere? Here is where the exhibition comes into play. The exhibition will provide valuable cultural information to all who view the collection. The exhibition will open approximately April 8, 2016, and should remain up for 3 months. This will allow its inclusion in celebrations of Pan-American Day, April 14, and Pan- American Week, April 10-16. The President of the United States each year proclaims April 14 to be Pan-American Day.

Here is where I need your help. I need to raise funds to cover the conservation fees charged by the Art Museum of the Americas. Conservation fees cover maintenance, upkeep and repair of the works of art in transit and on display. This exhibition will draw viewers from the Kansas City area, as well as from the states that surround us. It will be marketed not only to adults, but to school children as well. We already have commitments of attendance from leaders in Washington, DC!

In addition to education, this exhibition will help focus Kansas City as a location of importance for the OAS. With the multi-cultural make-up of our city and its prominence in world trade, Kansas City can take its rightful place as the cross-cultural hub of the heartland.

Please help us provide cross-cultural education through this wonderful exhibition, America’s People and their Cultures: Art of the Americas and Cultural Relativism in the Western Hemrisphere, by clicking on the Donate button today.
