Arthur’s Recovery

My little brother is currently serving in the USMC and was deployed. We got a call early morning on April 20, 2021 from the Marine Corps Casualty Response department notifying us of an accident involving my brother.

The report stated he “fell approximately 20 ft while conducting maintenance”. He broke his wrist and injured his back falling off an aircraft onto the flight deck. He was medevac’d to a hospital in Portugal for emergency surgery.

My family and I had to google almost every hospital in Portugal to locate him which was so difficult because none of us speak portugués. Luckily my aunt had a friend who did (bless her) and came out to help call and speak to the hospitals. We finally found him hours later. We all incurred roaming charges of $750+ each due to this.

We spoke to the doctor and found out that my brother was in a serious condition and they couldn’t say whether or not he’ll be able to walk. He suffered a severe spinal cord injury and lost movement in the lower part of his body. Once his surgery was complete he woke up in the ICU alone in a foreign country with no one familiar around. 

Since then, my mother was able to fly outto be by his side and escort him to Germany and finally back to the states. 

He is currently at Walter Reed in MD beginning physical therapy before he can be transported to a spinal cord injury rehabilitation center for his recovery. 

The doctors are saying this will be a long recovery and some effects may result in permanent disability. We still do not know if he will regain sensation in certain parts of his body. 

I created this solely for the reason that we have family and friends who generously continue to offer and wish to support any way financially. Though our expenses aren’t great right now, we will be incurring them down the road during his recovery and return home.
