On May 6, 2021, Ivan Arteaga, an Early College High School Social Studies teacher, was driving his three sons to school and was struck by a semi-truck on I-10. The family was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Katy, TX, but the youngest son, Adrian (5th grade), had to be transported via life-flight to Memorial Hermann downtown for brain injuries. Adrian then spent the next 3 1/2 weeks in the hospital or in rehab. The hospital bills from the transportation, emergency procedures, monitoring, and speech rehabilitation are enormous.
