Hi everyone, my name is Katie and I am the art teacher at Redwood High School, a continuation school in Redwood City, CA!
I am raising funds to purchase art supplies for our wonderful students when they return to school at the beginning of August. As a teacher who believes in the power of a robust arts education I am working, with your help, to supply these kids with materials they are able to use in the classroom and at home via distance learning.
About Redwood High School
Redwood High is a continuation high school for juniors and seniors who are looking to make up course credit and earn their diploma. Redwood offers a ton of support for our students to help them succeed in life after high school including an in-school day care center, a culinary arts program, woodshop classes, and art/design courses. Our classes run on 6 week grading periods meaning that we offer short and expedited curriculum for students to 'catch up' and earn necessary credits.
About Our Students
Nearly all of our students qualify for free and reduced lunches and have additional challenges that bring them to an alternative school setting. They are incredibly bright kids who are looking to do everything in their power to finish high school.
Distance Learning and Increased Art Dept. Expenses
As a part of our plan for students to safely return in the fall we will have a combination of on-campus and at-home work for students. For art classes this means that students will meet with me in the classroom only once a week and will work from home 4 days a week. This new, albeit necessary plan, has created many challenges including unforeseen expenses for art classes since each student will need their own personal set of art supplies to take home. Over the course of the year we estimate there will be approximately 400 students that will take an art class! The school has partially increased their budget for the art department this year but it is simply not enough to give our students what I feel is equitable access to a decent art curriculum.
Supplies Needed
Below is a link indicating the immediate supplies I will be placing an order for by mid July so they will arrive for the start of school year in August. I have allocated $2,650 of the fundraising goal for supplies to start the school year and the additional $850 will be for replacement supplies as needed throughout the 2020-2021 academic year. Please feel free to follow us on Instagram to see what our students will be working on starting this fall and how your generous donation is being used! Thank you for your support!
