The sheriff's office says deputies were chasing a stolen vehicle with five teenagers inside when the pedestrian was hit near South Hamilton Road and Winchester Pike in southeast Franklin County. The pedestrian, who was later identified as 61-year-old Arthur Smith, was taken to Grant Medical Center, and was upgraded to stable condition.
According to the sheriff’s office, the stolen vehicle was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of South Hamilton Road and struck a Smith, who was crossing the street.
The chase ended just a couple blocks away near the intersection of Winchester Pike and Battersea Road. Five juvenile suspects inside the car got out and ran on foot, but were caught by deputies. Authorities haven't said how the chase ended, but a car was seen sitting on the front yard of a home. Sheriff's officials say inside the car they also found a large amount of alcohol, stolen credit cards, and credit card skimming devices. The driver was out of jail on a previous stolen vehicle charge, according to authorities.
Sadly Art was probably trying to get McDonald's or the bus stop or start walking back home on his usual paths.
Most everyone would recognize him by the red cart he pulls behind himself.  either with groceries or scrap metal.                                 I've known Art for years and use to have our daily conversation when he was waiting for the bus in front of my house.
The picture says it all.
You never see Art without his cart.
