There are times in life that are too tragic for words and too hard to bear. On Tuesday, January 12, 2021 that chapter started for those who knew and loved Arthur Lopez when he tragically lost his life to COVID. 

This page was created in response to the incredible outpouring of love and support from friends and family who have expressed a desire to help Art’s family. All donations will benefit his wife, son, daughter, and grandbabies with their immediate and long-term needs as they move forward. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. 

Art was born and raised in Santa Monica and dedicated his life to the City of Santa Monica. He met his wife, Tina Lopez in August of 1985 and they’ve been inseparable ever since. Together they raised their son Eric and daughter Eleanor. He also had the joy of helping care for their grandbabies, Eric Jr. (8 years old) and Rose (soon to be 1 year old). 

Art was a member of the Santa Monica Police Department from June 1985 until he retired in December 2016. The entirety of this 30+ years was spent on and around the world-famous 3rd Street Promenade. Art was truly the “heart and soul” of the Promenade. He was always a positive influence to his co-workers and was like a father (or grandfather in some cases!) to them.   He truly “molded” and trained the many sergeants assigned to supervise the Promenade Bicycle Unit over the years to just follow his lead.

Art started as a foot beat “Structure Guard” then became a Community Service Officer (CSO1), eventually promoting to the Lead CSO1, and finally a Public Safety Officer Supervisor.
