For the last two summers I have helped an organization called Unity Healthcare, which is a ground-breaking health organization in DC serving the homeless and those in extreme poverty, by doing "street medicine" rounds with a doctor there.
Unity Healthcare describes themselves: "As the largest network of community health centers in Washington, D.C., Unity Health Care provides a full-range of health and human services to meet the needs of our communities through a network of over 20 traditional and non-traditional health sites. Our team of compassionate and multicultural health professionals place Unity values into action every day to bring whole-person care and wellness to over 104,000 patients through 500,000 visits annually. Deeply rooted in the District’s neighborhoods for over 30 years, Unity strives to promote healthier communities through compassion and comprehensive primary and specialty health care and wrap-around services, regardless of ability to pay."
Since the recent outbreak of Covid-19, Unity Healthcare has had to completely adapt and refocus how they aid low-income and homeless people who have fallen ill, to help prevent the spread of the virus- especially to high risk patients. They have created two hotels to house homeless populations--one hotel with those who are infected, and one to house those who would be at very high risk of complications should they be exposed.
For the next several weeks I will be working on three projects to help aid their mission this summer.
First, I will be making masks, which are still greatly needed among the homeless population. I have made and donated masks to unity in the past, and they are easy to make and very effective at preventing coronavirus spread.
Second, I will be compiling toiletry and wellness kits that include things such as first aid and personal hygiene items.
Third, I will be putting together art kits to give to the high risk patients in the quarantined hotels, so they are able to have a creative outlet over the course of this pandemic.
Any amount raised over the cost of the materials will go directly to Unity Healthcare DC.
I am reaching out to YOU to see if you are willing to help me fundraise and support these efforts in helping the impoverished population of Washington DC during this unprecedented time in our worlds history.
Any amount helps! Please feel free to share if you are inclined!
