THE PROJECT

Hello everyone! :)

My name is Andrea Codega, and I am an Italian artist and surfer temporarily living in Cape Town, South Africa. Here, I have found a huge source of inspiration for my new art, and I need your support to make my vision a reality.

It all started last year, while surfing at Muizenberg Beach, where I got to know the Shark Spotters, a local non-profit, non-governmental organisation dedicated to beach safety, wildlife conservation, research and education. Their main goal is simple but vital: to protect both sharks and water users.

From lookout points above different beaches, they scan the ocean, monitor shark activity, and, through their flag system based on the beach, warn surfers and swimmers in real time, gathering essential data about sharks’ behaviour along Cape Town’s coastline.

I had no idea a single organisation could play such an essential role in the delicate relationship between humans and sharks, and their flag system struck me immediately: simple, innovative, and incredibly powerful.

It was from looking at those flags that I got the idea for “COLOURS OF COEXISTENCE”, an independent fundraising art exhibition in support of Shark Spotters.

THE IDEA

My main idea is to expand their flag system into a series of paintings, surfboards, and apparel, turning flags into an even stronger educational and cultural symbol, one that bridges safety and creativity. This project represents a meaningful step for my art, while directly contributing to a very important cause.

My intention is to dedicate myself full-time over the next two months to transforming Shark Spotters’ flags into artworks that amplify their message and engage the community. I plan to create four hand-painted surfboards incorporating real Shark Spotters’ flags, handmade artworks, a series of limited-edition prints and illustrations, and a small collection of t-shirts and merchandise.

All this art will merge the colours and symbolism of the Shark Spotters flags with my giraffe coat-inspired pattern, a visual language I first developed in Senegal to celebrate the natural beauty of the African continent.

ABOUT ME

After studying Fine Arts at the Brera Academy in Milan, my artistic work has always been deeply connected to nature. Wherever I go, from Senegal to Portugal, from Italy to South Africa, I always try to use my art as a tool to give something meaningful back to the local community and honour what inspires me the most, from local wildlife to the Atlantic Ocean.

During my latest experiences and exhibitions in Dakar, Senegal, thanks to all of you who supported my art and projects, we donated more than 1,000 euros to the NGO Surfkids Shredding Senegal. We left a colourful, positive mark in a community that gave me so much. The outcome was incredibly positive, both artistically and socially, and it showed me how powerful art can be in supporting community-driven initiatives.

This experience made me believe in the power of visual language to inspire awareness and empathy. That feeling, that art can actually help, is what drives me forward in pursuing this new fundraising project.

This time, my art will be displayed on the 21st of February at the Sharks Spotters’ HQ in Muizenberg, South Africa and will culminate in “COLOURS OF COEXISTENCE”.

In this way, my art becomes more than expression; it becomes action and a living connection between creativity, conservation, and community.

WHY I NEED YOUR SUPPORT

To make this project real, working independently, full-time, and without asking Shark Spotters for any financial support, I need help to cover the essentials:

IL PROGETTO

Ciao a tutti! :)

Mi chiamo Andrea Codega, sono un artista e surfista italiano che attualmente vive a Città del Capo, in Sudafrica. Qui ho trovato una grande fonte di ispirazione per la mia nuova arte e avrei bisogno del vostro sostegno per trasformare la mia idea in realtà.

Tutto è iniziato l'anno scorso, mentre facevo surf sulla spiaggia di Muizenberg, dove ho conosciuto gli Shark Spotters, un'organizzazione non governativa locale senza scopo di lucro che si occupa della sicurezza delle spiagge, della conservazione della fauna selvatica e dell'educazione marina. Il loro obiettivo principale è semplice, ma fondamentale: proteggere sia gli squali che le persone che frequentano l’oceano.

Da diversi punti di osservazione sopraelevati rispetto alle spiagge, monitorano l'attività degli squali e, tramite un sistema di bandiere, avvisano i surfisti e i nuotatori in tempo reale, raccogliendo dati essenziali sul comportamento degli squali lungo la costa di Città del Capo.

Non avevo idea che una singola organizzazione potesse svolgere un ruolo così importante nel delicato rapporto tra esseri umani e squali e il loro sistema di bandiere mi ha colpito immediatamente: semplice, intelligente e incredibilmente efficace.

È stato proprio osservando queste bandiere che mi è venuta l'idea di "COLOURS OF COEXISTENCE", una mostra d'arte in collaborazione e a sostegno dei Shark Spotters.

L’IDEA

L'idea è quella di espandere il loro sistema di bandiere in una serie di dipinti, tavole da surf e abbigliamento, trasformandole in un simbolo educativo e culturale ancora più forte, unendo sicurezza e creatività. Questo progetto rappresenta un passo significativo per la mia arte, poiché mi permette di contribuire direttamente a una causa molto importante.

La mia intenzione è dedicarmi a tempo pieno nei prossimi due mesi alla trasformazione delle bandiere di Shark Spotters in opere d'arte che amplifichino il loro messaggio e coinvolgano la comunità. Il mio piano è quello di creare quattro tavole da surf dipinte a mano, così come dipinti e disegni, che incorporano le vere bandiere degli Shark Spotters, una serie di stampe e illustrazioni in edizione limitata e una piccola collezione di magliette e merchandising.

Tutta questa arte fonderà i colori e il simbolismo delle bandiere degli Shark Spotters con il mio motivo ispirato al mantello della giraffa, un linguaggio visivo che ho sviluppato per la prima volta in Senegal con lo scopo di celebrare la bellezza naturale del continente africano.

CHI SONO

Dopo essermi laureato in Pittura all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera a Milano, il mio lavoro artistico è sempre stato profondamente legato alla natura. Ovunque vada, dal Senegal al Portogallo, dall'Italia al Sudafrica, cerco sempre di usare la mia arte come strumento per restituire qualcosa di significativo alla comunità e rendere omaggio a ciò che mi ispira di più: la fauna locale e l'Oceano Atlantico.

Durante le mie ultime mostre a Dakar, in Senegal, grazie al vostro sostegno, siamo riusciti a donare oltre 1000 euro all'ONG Surfkids Shredding Senegal e a lasciare un segno positivo e super colorato in una comunità che mi ha dato tanto. Il risultato è stato incredibilmente incoraggiante, sia dal punto di vista artistico sia da quello sociale, e mi ha dimostrato quanto l'arte possa essere potente nel sostenere iniziative culturali e benefiche. Queste esperienze mi hanno fatto credere nel potere del linguaggio visivo ed è questa convinzione che mi spinge a proseguire con questo nuovo progetto di raccolta fondi.

Questa volta, le mie opere saranno esposte il 21 febbraio presso la sede centrale degli Shark Spotters a Muizenberg, in Sudafrica, e culmineranno con la mostra d'arte "COLOURS OF COEXISTENCE”.

In questo modo, la mia arte diventa più di semplice espressione; diventa azione e un legame vivo tra creatività, conservazione e comunità.

Je m’appelle Andrea Codega, je suis un artiste et surfeur italien actuellement vivant à Cape Town, en Afrique du Sud. Ici, j’ai trouvé une immense source d’inspiration pour mon nouveau projet artistique, et j’ai besoin de votre soutien pour transformer cette vision en réalité.

Tout a commencé l’année dernière, lorsque je surfais sur la plage de Muizenberg. J'y ai rencontré les Shark Spotters, une organisation non gouvernementale et à but non lucratif qui se consacre à la sécurité des plages, à la conservation de la faune marine, à la recherche et à l’éducation. Leur objectif principal est simple, mais essentiel : protéger à la fois les requins et les usagers de l’océan.

Depuis plusieurs postes d’observation situés au-dessus des plages, ils surveillent l’activité des requins et, grâce à un système de drapeaux, avertissent en temps réel les surfeurs et les nageurs, tout en recueillant des données essentielles sur le comportement des requins le long du littoral de Cape Town.

Je n’imaginais pas qu’une organisation puisse jouer un rôle aussi important dans la relation délicate entre humains et requins. Leur système de drapeaux m’a immédiatement conquis : simple, intelligent et incroyablement efficace.

C’est en observant ces drapeaux que m’est venue l’idée de “COLOURS OF COEXISTENCE”, une exposition artistique indépendante organisée en soutien aux Shark Spotters.

L’IDÉE

Mon intention est de transformer leur système de drapeaux en une série de tableaux, planches de surf et vêtements, afin de créer un symbole culturel et éducatif encore plus fort, alliant sécurité et créativité. Ce projet représente une étape importante dans mon parcours artistique, tout en soutenant une cause essentielle.

Je souhaite consacrer mes deux prochains mois à temps plein à la transformation des drapeaux des Shark Spotters en œuvres qui amplifient leur message et impliquent la communauté. Mon objectif : créer quatre planches de surf peintes à la main intégrant de véritables drapeaux Shark Spotters, des œuvres originales, une série de tirages et d’illustrations en édition limitée, ainsi qu’une petite collection de t-shirts et de produits dérivés.

Cette production artistique fusionne les couleurs et le symbolisme des drapeaux avec mon motif inspiré du pelage de la girafe, un langage visuel que j’ai développé pour la première fois au Sénégal afin de célébrer la beauté naturelle du continent africain.

QUI SUIS-JE

Après avoir étudié les Beaux-Arts à l’Académie de Brera à Milan, mon travail artistique a toujours été profondément lié à la nature. Où que j’aille, du Sénégal au Portugal, de l’Italie à l’Afrique du Sud, j’essaie d’utiliser mon art pour rendre quelque chose de significatif aux communautés locales et pour honorer ce qui m’inspire : la faune, la nature et l’océan Atlantique.

Lors de mes dernières expositions à Dakar, grâce à votre soutien, nous avons pu collecter et reverser plus de 1 000 euros à l’ONG Surfkids Shredding Sénégal, tout en laissant une empreinte colorée et positive au sein d’une communauté qui m’a beaucoup apporté. Le résultat a été extrêmement encourageant, tant sur le plan artistique que social, et il m’a prouvé combien l’art peut être un outil puissant pour soutenir des initiatives locales et solidaires.

Cette expérience m’a convaincu du pouvoir du langage visuel pour susciter la sensibilisation et l’empathie. C’est cette conviction – que l’art peut réellement aider – qui m’anime aujourd’hui dans ce nouveau projet de soutien.

Cette fois-ci, mes œuvres seront exposées le 21 février au siège des Shark Spotters, à Muizenberg, avec comme point culminant l’exposition “COLOURS OF COEXISTENCE”.

De cette manière, mon art devient bien plus qu’une expression: il devient action, engagement, et lien vivant entre créativité, conservation et communauté.
