Art for Justice of the Wrongfully Convicted
Donation protected
I’m Sky Parra, a visual artist and researcher based in Brisbane. My project DENIED: Portraits of Wrongful Conviction responds to miscarriages of justice and their devastating impact through intimate oil paintings. Since 2021, I’ve travelled across Australia to meet and paint individuals who have been wrongfully convicted of serious crimes. Through collaborative storytelling and portraiture, DENIED offers powerful testimonies that challenge stereotypes and encourage critical reflection on perceptions of guilt, innocence, and human worth. Engaging the humanising power of art, DENIED gives voice and visibility to those overlooked and forgotten by our justice system.
Why Your Support Matters
I need your help by May 1st! I have an upcoming exhibition in May at the Salamanca Arts Centre in Hobart, but I need assistance getting the work there. While this project is a full-time undertaking, I’m also balancing part-time study and work to cover the costs of this self-funded endeavour. Despite facing significant financial challenges, I’m committed to continuing this important work.
I’m needing to raise $5,000 to cover the immediate cost of freight to Tasmania and gallery fees. Beyond this immediate need, any additional support will help sustain the project moving forward. Your support means everything!
How Funds Will Be Used
- $3,000 for Freight: Ensuring these portraits reach exhibition!
- $2000 for Gallery Fees: To help cover the remaining cost of the venue.
Why This Project Matters
This work must be witnessed to fulfill its purpose. These stories deserve to be seen, heard, and remembered. Art has the unique capacity to humanise complex issues and inspire meaningful change – your support makes that possible.
Stay Connected
I’ll keep you informed every step of the way, from the success of this exhibition to the ongoing creation of new portraits. Your support will be part of this journey, and I’m excited to share each milestone with you.
