For those of you who do not know me, let me introduce myself. My name is Josh and I am currently a semester deep into my first year as a full time art teacher. It has been a wild ride and a learning experience at every turn. In my quest to better my classroom and grow the student's experience I have been exploring every avenue to better my craft. In doing so I stumbled across some blogs and podcasts that have really helped me during this chaotic first year. While reading the blogs and listening to the podcasts one major similarity started to show through and that is the value of attending a National Art Educators Association Convention. Just my luck the convention is to be held in New York City this year! When I found this out I not only squealed like a little Beatles fan catching a glimpse of Lennon, but I also jumped on the task of getting funding to whisk me away.
Unfortunately every path I went down ended in a dead end. I reached out to my school, but we do not have extra funds in the budget. I reached out to the district and they told me there is nothing they can do for this year. I researched grants and scholarships, but could find nothing that would apply for the 2016-17 school year. I have tried saving as much as I can, but as a first year Washington teacher I don't make much and I need to provide as much for my family as possible. That is where this campaign comes in. I am desperate and have exhausted my ideas on how to get there. I am asking my family, friends, and anyone else to please help me reach New York.
If you would like some more specifics please keep reading. If not, thank you for your time and every penny and share counts.
How will I grow:
Since starting the school year I have taken on multiple responsibilities in the school. Including being the advisor to the Art Club and a member of our school's PBIS Team (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports). Along with being a active member on the team I also volunteered to be the advisor for our student team as well. What that means is I am in charge of 30 more students, beyond the already 150 I see in my classes. We work biweekly as a team to try to boost student involvement and evolve our programs to inspire positive behavior from the students in and out of the classroom. If that does not seem like a lot already, I am also trying to join the AVID site team for our school. That would entail me adopting and using AVID strategies in my class to further our students potential for a college bound education. Not coincidentally these two programs have been chosen to be the the direction our school is taking.
During the Convention there are many amazing speakers and workshops that will not only help me in my classroom, but can also be used in both my PBIS and AVID work. An extremely added bonus is that the theme of this years Convention is "The Challenge of Change" and I don't know about you, but I can't think of a group who struggles with change more than middle schoolers.
Costs:
Air Travel: Round Trip (Alaska Airlines) $316.20
Hotel (estimated): $800 total of 4 nights five days (expedia.com)
Convention: $165
Workshops: $39 each
Food: $50 a day (estimated)
Transportation: $20 a day (estimated)
Total: $2200 (estimated)
These are prices that are based off my findings on 12/3/2016.
