“I was out on an errand,” Amanda told me in sobs, “and hadn’t realized how bad it was until I returned. But when I returned, I realized I had lost everything.”
Mexico City’s earthquake on September 19, 2017, had destroyed her home.
I have known Amanda since she was an infant, and her mother is one of my dearest friends, and one of the most generous people I know. Those who know them know that Amanda and her husband Gerry are just as dear, and stories of their good-hearted, selfless acts of compassion and friendship abound. It breaks my heart to see pictures of what remains of the life they were building together, and saddens me to imagine the difficulties they are facing.
Amanda and Gerardo feel incredibly blessed that all they have lost is material. But that loss will be hard to make up.
That is why I have opened this page to ask for whatever contributions our social community might be able to make to help a deserving family get back on their feet again. Everything you give will go into helping them set up a new home (rent, new furniture, begin saving for a new down payment, deductible on their insurance so they don't have to finish paying their mortgage on a condemned apartment) , and anything left over will go to a charity helping disaster victims in Mexico. If you cannot donate at this moment, perhaps you can share this post and encourage others to help them.
When disasters strike, so many of us feel so very grateful to have survived, and wish with all our hearts to reach out and help others in need. Sometimes we do that as a community, for the community, and sometimes we do that as individuals, for individuals. Here is a chance to make a huge difference in the life of one of the countless victims of last week’s earthquake. Thank you for whatever part you play in helping. Thank you, life.
