You can make a difference by donating today to The Association of Radical Midwives (www.midwifery.org.uk) to support Afghan midwives who are currently seeking to resettle in the UK. Midwives in Afghanistan are advocates for women's rights and sexual health. They have been targeted over recent years - in a 2018 attack on a School of Midwifery (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-44991470) and in the 2020 attack on a maternity ward (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-52631071 ), both of which resulted in multiple deaths, and so are at specific risk. They are unable to go to work unless accompanied by a male relative and are already finding it impossible to carry on working and studying. Some are seeking to leave Afghanistan whilst the Taliban regime remains in power.
We are in touch with midwives who are seeking to resettle under the new scheme for Vulnerable non-British People in Afghanistan which will prioritise women and children. We need to fund raise in order to buy phone top-ups needed for visa applications, possibly some air fares and other (as yet unknown) expenses once visas are granted. There is also a cost each time one emails Visas and Immigration (£2.78) or rings the Home Office 0300 number (69p a minute) , and doubtless other such extraordinary expenses will arise. We will NOT make any direct payments that might result in money ending up in the hands of people smugglers, but will only make purchases on behalf of the midwives as they need.
All monies raised will be overseen by ARM and accounted for. Any excess monies raised will be used for similar causes to benefit midwives and their clients.
