Arleen and Children Fund

Spende geschützt
Hello friend,

If you are here then you may know some backstory as to why this fund was initiated. If you stumble onto this, we hope this story moves you and you share it with those close to you for awareness on how serious Covid is so you don't live the nightmare we have endured.

Arleen Sosa is a daughter to Oscar and Mabel, mother to Emily and James, fiancée to Erick, sister to Oscar, and friend to many of us.

In late July she was diagnosed with Covid and was admitted August 5, 2021 to hospital at 7 months pregnant due to her inability to breathe. After 5 days, it was decided that she would be intubated and an emergency C-section at 31 weeks would be performed in order to save baby James and to properly treat Arleen. After baby James was safely delivered, Arleen's breathing did not improve as her lungs had hardened, so she would be sedated to give her lungs a break in order to heal. On August 12, we were called and advised her condition further deteriorated and that she clinically died, as she suffered strokes during cardiac arrest when the hospital was placing her on life support. After 53 minutes, two teams attempting to bring her back, they got her heart to start up again. Unfortunately, after so long, hypoxia and anoxia severely affected her brain and kidneys. Blood flow was stagnant in her body while she was without oxygen and her left leg was amputated as a result of the damage and necrosis. To date, Arleen is clinically awake but in vegetative state, however, unresponsive to commands, still on a ventilator, and on dialysis.

The family has met with the neurology team and there is no certainty in her prognosis, essentially telling us that her condition is considered indeterminate and the next 4-10 months are critical because her brain will either heal or it won't.

Ultimately, she will be transferred to a long term care facility that will care for her in hopes that her condition will improve. This facility is meant to provide respiratory treatment, care for the bed sores, physical therapy to move and mobilize her extremities to prevent atrophy, among many other treatments and care that will hopefully assist her brain to heal and bring her back to us.

Arleen was working as a nurse and is the toughest, bravest, most selfless person and was firm in ensuring her children's future. Arleen was always up and about taking Emily to the zoo, the aquarium, Disney, and any other activity she could share and take her to. She was always fiercely independent and proud to provide everything in her power to her little girl, and her baby boy on the way.

If there is anything to be learned and shared from this, it is that we need to keep each other safe. We need to be cognizant of those who are immunocompromised and do our due diligence to ensure that we minimize the spread. Vaccinated or not, we need to do our part (in whatever way that means for you) to prevent this from recurring among other people so more children don't lose their parents and so parents don't outlive their children.

She was certain she wanted everything possible to be done to save James, and she was certain in the life she wanted for both her kids. Right now, while we hope and pray she comes back to us, we want to ensure we can secure the best possible care for her and secure the best possible future for Emily and James.

If it is in your heart to make a donation towards assisting the family with Arleen's care and the children's future and care, we wholeheartedly thank you. However, if it is in your heart to keep our family in your prayers for Arleen's recovery, we thank you for that too. Our goal is to provide as much stability as possible for Erick, Emily, and James and to emulate the future Arleen wants for her children.

This is Arleen and her beautiful family.
