On July 27th, Arlando "Tray" Jones celebrated his 54th birthday behind bars in the Jessup Correctional Institution, where he had been for over 37 years. After 37 years too many, Tray's birthday wish came true, and he was released from prison on July 29th.
Incarcerated for a crime he didn't commit, the toll of 37 years unjustly taken is immeasurable. But, for Tray, this time hasn’t passed him by. Gaining a college degree, publishing 2 books, and earning the title of Jessup's resident philosopher, Tray has dedicated his time incarcerated to education and rehabilitation.
And now, he is committed to bringing that vision beyond prison walls. Born and raised in East Baltimore, Tray’s story is one of tragedy, perseverance, and stolen youth. His mother had him when she was 14. His father was killed by the police before Tray turned 2. And he was convicted when he was 16. Tray was a victim before he was a suspect, a tale that is far too common, and a tale he is dedicated to changing.
All funds raised will go towards this vision, working to assist Tray in overcoming the financial barriers of re-entry, ensuring that he has the resources to fulfill his dream: “to give more to society than society has given to him.” In order to do so, the funds will go to Tray's fiancee, Joy, with whom he shares his finances.
