ARK Storyteller Workshop

This year for my 30th birthday, I am investing $1,000 to teachers based in Capiz, Philippines as part of ARK (Advancement for Rural Kids) partner communities. Your contribution will pilot a unique writer-storyteller’s workshop series that will showcase stories from teachers, students, and their families in Capiz.
The writer-storyteller workshop series has been a dream of mine since 2016 when I was introduced to ARK and Ayesha through my dear friend Adrian Bonifacio. In September, I am placing my efforts to bring Bronx-based youths to ARK’s communities in order to co-lead and participate in the storytelling workshops.
Some of you might wonder: why, Mila? And I pose to you: what is your story?
If teaching has taught me anything, it’s this: tell your story. Teaching, much like storytelling, is rarely one-sided. The students are rich from experiences they want to share, a mix of joyful, sad, and funny stories. Each year, I learn from them: how to be more empathetic; to meet people where they are; to be patient with who you are, both past and present, and to feel excited about the person who you might be becoming…
And so, it came to me one day while leaving the Bronx, why not bridge these two worlds, so dear to my heart, and invite youths and teachers meet and exchange stories?
The stories we tell ourselves and one another matter - they linger, they are powerful. In fact, many of you who have already told me about precious and challenging moments in your life have profoundly moved and inspired me - in ways that I know will stay with me forever!
Through our own storytelling, I believe wholeheartedly that we heal ourselves and multiply our joy... By creating a space where these stories can be shared and celebrated, we build a borderless community and diverse collective.
