Ariel is my bright, beautiful 16 year old niece whose life changed in an instant. What began as a routine procedure to treat a blood vessel issue in her brain (an arterial dissection that required a stent) quickly turned into a fight for her life.

Shortly after the procedure, Ariel suffered severe brain swelling and bleeding. Doctors performed an emergency craniectomy (removing part of her skull) to relieve the pressure, and she was placed in a medically induced coma to protect her brain. Her intracranial pressure (ICP) reached dangerously high levels, and she has endured numerous complications since — including a large stroke, a new brain hemorrhage, and critical fevers.

Ariel remains in the intensive care unit, receiving 24/7 care, including powerful antibiotics to fight off infection. Her recovery journey will be long, uncertain, and incredibly challenging.
