Hello!
My name is Whitney Lewis and I'm soliciting your help for Coretta and Courtney. Coretta King Layfield (Tee Slick) is the most giving, caring and selfless person I've ever known. Due to a senseless crime to her son Courtney and now unforseen back pain Coretta is unable to lift her son. In spite of her circumstances she is ALWAYS there for others and now it's time for us to be there for her. Please be a blessing and donate to the cause as soon as possible to purchase a dependable Handicap Accesible Van to make her life a little easier. As you read her story, put youself in her shoes. Thanking you all in advance!
My name is Coretta King Layfield. I am the mother of one son, Courtney King, who is in desperate need of a Handicap Van with a lift for transportation. Our lives changed on St Patrick's Day, March 17, 2007. At the age of 19, Courtney was shot in the head by someone shooting at someone else. When I received the call that Courtney had been shot and wasn't breathing, I immediately rushed to get to him pleading the blood of Jesus. By the time I got to my car I received another call stating he was on his way to the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital, I beat him there.
When I arrived at UAB a lady came out and said Courtney wasn't there yet but all she could tell me was he was shot in the jaw and it may not be as bad as we think. It seemed like it took forever for the Ambulance to get there. About 45 minutes later they came out and took our family in a conference room and informed us Courtney was unconscious, with a bullet lodged in his brain and that it didn't look good. They needed me to sign for him to have immediate brain surgery but said he had very little chance of surviving. I then asked could I please see him and I did for about 5 minutes before surgery. When I saw my baby (he'll always be my baby) all bloody, head wrapped up, I thought I was going to pass out but after getting myself together I had a little talk with Courtney.
I started pleading the blood of Jesus over his body asking God to shed his Grace and Mercy on Courtney and that I would take him anyway he saw fit if God just gave him back to me. I then whispered in his ear to talk to God for himself and ask him to save him, although everyone was praying for him he needed to pray for himself and that I was there and loved him. I didn't think I had that many tears to shed, I cried until my eyes were swollen. About 3 hours later the Doctor came out and said Courtney made it through Surgery but had suffered a Stroke, was in a Coma, and the next 48 hours was most critical. Courtney wasn't responding well to the doctors with very little improvements. I somehow got away from everyone and went to the Chapel. I looked around the room and no one was there so I bowed down at the Podium and began to cry out to God. "Lord what in this world have I done so bad that I have to go through this? (I felt like God was punishing me)." I then heard the voice of God say "What makes you any different from anyone else to have to go through, Courtney is going to be alright."
I didn't understand at first what that meant. Was he going to be alright in Heaven or on Earth? But I couldn't cry anymore because God gave me my confirmation. Over the next couple of days there was no improvement and we were called in a conference room 2 more times about taking him off life support. One doctor just came out and told me we were just running the bill up that they couldn't keep giving him blood (Over 12 blood products and blood Platelets), that he was brain dead and if he was to survive he would probably have to live in a nursing home. I told that Doctor as long as Courtney was fighting for his life to do whatever they needed to do to help him because God is the chief Physician and has the last Say. That very same day Courtney blood started clotting up and haven't had to have any more to this day. He came out of the Coma in seven days and slowly started reacting to commands but the Stoke affected his left side.
Courtney was in the hospital for 2 months before coming home not talking, with a Trach, and a feeding tube. Due to the Stroke and TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) Courtney has multiple doctor appointments and he is totally dependent on me for his 24 hour care. He’s in a Specialized Wheelchair and has gained weight, can't stand at all and really need a dependable van with a lift for transportation.
God shows us miracles every day and I believe he has a purpose for Courtney’s life is the reason he’s still here. Courtney can put a smile on your face with his sense of humor and he truly loves God, his family and friends. We have met and made so many friends because of his injury that our paths would have never crossed and thank God for each and every one of them. Sometimes God will allow bad things to happen to good people to show just how good he really is. God is good all the time and Courtney is truly a miracle Child with a testimony.
Sometimes it can be very difficult to put your pride to the side and ask for help but I believe in the Word of God that we have not because we ask not.
Thanking you all from the bottom of my heart….
