Architectural Research Expedition
Assist my travels to educational programs and professional practices that put design/build principles into action.
Design/Build architecture represents more than simply a project delivery system used in the construction industry. Toward the end of my five year architectural education at Cornell University I discovered it as a source of creative benefit by involving myself physically in the architectural process. Channeling social thinker John Ruskin, I aimed for an architecture, "in which the hand, the head, and the heart of man go together."
While noticeably absent from my own education, the tenets of design/build are actively utilized by a niche of academics and professionals as methods of learning, engaging with community, and developing contextually conscious works of architecture. These institutions promote a movement rooted in history that has enormous potential to address environmental and social issues faced by contemporary architecture.
Through intense collaboration with a friend and mentor over the past year, I have created a 3-month itinerary that connects designer/builders in a 12,000 mile cross-country circuit.
Together, we recognized the full potential of design/build pedagogy and practice as yet untapped, and one step in this direction would be to establish a network of people, programs, and projects embracing its philosophy. We hoped to generate such a network and find our own place in it by engaging its active participants personally, producing a first-hand research narrative that may grow into a valuable public resource.
I will begin my travels independently on September 24. Your generous donation will go toward my budget for gas and food and materials for documentation:
(12000 mi / 16 mpg x $2.5 = $1875)
(90 days x 3 camp meals x $5 = $1350)
($275 film and ink)
Through your contribution, you will not only provide monetary support but also personal support and encouragement for a cause much greater than myself.
I am deeply thankful for any and all donations!
