We all know the job market is really tough right now. The truth is, it has been in tech for some time. Having experienced three layoffs in three years and exhausting my financial safety net, this summer, I was hit with the biggest blow of all.

Two months ago, out of nowhere, Archie had his first cluster seizure (more than two in 24 hours). Clusters are extremely dangerous for dogs. They can cause overheating, organ failure, and in some cases be life-threatening. Even on anti-seizure medication, Archie is still having breakthrough seizures that require constant monitoring.

The next step is a neurological consult to figure out if there’s another underlying cause. That means tests like an MRI, spinal fluid tap, and other specialized procedures. These are lifesaving but also crushingly expensive. On top of that, every time Archie has a breakthrough cluster, I lose work and wages because I have to be home with him, making sure he pulls through safely.

Archie isn’t just my dog; he’s my anchor. I’m autistic, and Archie has been my steady companion and service partner through some of the hardest years of my life. He’s my beloved Muppet man, my joy, my daily stability. But since his diagnosis, the roles have flipped. Now I’m his service human, doing everything I can to keep him safe.
