I am Elaine Schele, a friend of dear Alfonso and his family. For those who do not know him, from 1997 to 2001, he was the principal investigator of the Group of the Cross Group Project at the Classic Maya site of Palenque, Mexico, with Merle Greene Robertson as project director. He is the son of the famous Palenque tour guide, the late Moises Morales. Our beloved Alfonso developed a deadly infection called bacterial cellulitis (three varieties) in his left leg and foot 20+ days ago and is now in a public hospital in Merida, Yucatan. The leg and foot tissues have been cleaned three times, and now the doctors need to do it again. They have had to remove large parts of the infected leg and foot muscles. When he begins to recover, he will need skin grafts, physical therapy and a high protein diet to rebuild the muscles. But on September 9th, while in the hospital, he took a turn for the worse, having experienced two heart attacks and a seizure. He is now on a ventilator, and they are waiting for him to wake up. The doctors think it will take two weeks or longer before they know how much damage was done to his brain and heart. His sister Alicia is taking care of him in the hospital. This is a frightening situation for the family. I have created this GoFundMe page to help them raise money to assist Alfonso in getting through this medical emergency and pay for his nursing aids and other incidentals not covered by the hospital. He is in a Mexican public hospital, and the billing is based upon his ability to pay, so that expense is not his greatest challenge.
Suppose he recovers, and we hope and pray that he will. In that case, we may need to adjust our request upwards to cover prescriptions, pay for doctor’s appointments, medical supplies needed to take care of the very large wounds on his leg and foot, and help with recovery and rehabilitation after the infection has cleared up. As stated, he will also have to have skin grafts. His primary caretaker, his sister Alicia will manage any funds raised and ensure they are spent responsibly. We hope you will find it in your hearts to help.
