Dear friends of Arcadi,

You have all probably been wondering why you have not heard from Arcadi in recent months.  He suffered a stroke last summer which incapacitated him and forced him to enter a rehabilitation center in Westhampton--the best option available.  Despite his best efforts--and we all know Arcadi's amazing resiliency!--he has not been able to recover enough to come home to East Quogue.  His health insurance only covered three months of rehabilitative physical therapy and when that ended last summer, he went into a steep decline.  He is no longer able to stand nor does he have the use of his legs, he is legally blind and too weak to feed himself.  He was moved to the long term care section of the Westhampton facility several months ago.  In order for him to remain in the facility, as Arcadi's Medicare does not pay for prolonged long term care, the facility seized his personal assets--his social security and his pension--in effect leaving him with nothing.

The facility is heavily understaffed with only three health aides and two nurses for over 40 people, all of whom require special care and oversight.  My children and I try and visit on a daily basis; we help him eat and try and keep him cheerful.  I have also been paying a health aide to come once a day--to feed him, to keep him clean, to monitor his health.  His skin cancer is aggressive and untreatable due to his other underlying health conditions and there have been numerous times when I reported infections to the nursing staff that had gone unnoticed due to staffing shortages .

The financial burden of paying for a daily aide for Arcadi has become too much for me and as his health declines the need becomes greater.  In order to be properly looked after, to be clean and comfortable, to make sure that someone feeds him at least two meals per day, an aide needs to be available to him at least  five hours per day, seven days per week.  I am simply unable to continue paying for these services on my own.  As the coronavirus spreads and nursing homes including Westhampton are barring all visitors, health aides are still allowed in and Arcadi can still receive the care  he needs.

So dear friends, I am asking you to donate what you can so that Arcadi's end of life can be as comfortable as possible.  Through his music, his intellect, his originality, his spirituality and his kindness, Arcadi means so much to us all.

I and my children and of course Arcadi himself, thank you for whatever help you can give.
