For Nancy

Nancy Aileen Karola

November 19, 1981 - November 10, 2021

Nancy was a bright light. She was so full of life, love and compassion. She was the funniest person I’ve ever known. 

Sadly, Nancy became very ill in 2020, and was diagnosed with Wilson’s Disease and end-stage liver disease. Her liver could no longer filter toxins, which eventually took its toll on the rest of her organs. Her only hope was a liver transplant. And she was so close. Nancy was extremely hopeful and optimistic. She never once complained. She never once asked for anything.

In her last year, Nancy could no longer work and was in and out of the hospital, undergoing life-prolonging treatments. The small amount of savings she had managed to put away ended up going towards her living expenses and medical care.

Even though her doctor recommended bed rest, Nancy would often get dressed and do her makeup, pick up Starbucks, and run errands. She just wanted to feel normal, she said.

Her death was very sudden. Her son Nolan didn’t get to say goodbye. None of us did. Nancy’s greatest wish was for her son to live a happy life. She left him a little note, as she must have felt herself fading away. She wanted him to achieve his dreams and goals.

A lot of Nancy’s friends have reached out to lend their support and ask if we need anything. We’re very thankful. In lieu of flowers, I’d like to open an RESP for Nolan, so after graduating high school, he has a bit of savings to go towards his post secondary education.

Nancy never ever once in her life asked for help from her family. It’s out of my comfort zone to ask as well. But, if you would like to offer your support, please see the link below.
