My name is Ian Stearns. I'm a producer and the founder of A Production Company.
When I was 15 and going to a performing arts high school in Virginia, I was tasked with producing a showcase for my scene study class. I found a coffee shop to host us, made postcards, and set up the proceeds to be donated to a local hospital. Not too bad for 15.
I learned early on that there is nothing more satisfying in this entire world than putting on a show.
A decade and some change later, I finally started my own company. And I don't just want to put on a show, I want to create a better way to produce. I want ensure that my artists will work for what they are worth: a fair wage both on- and off-stage. I want to create work that is of this moment, and in doing so I will prioritize developing of the work of women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ playwrights, who still lack an equal voice in commercially produced theatre.
This company is about telling the stories that we are all desperate to hear. The fabric of American theatre should be made of American stories, not endless movie musical adaptations.
It is about creating a space for commercial theatre to be responsible to the people who make it, with a long-term goal of profit sharing to the artists whose vision make our productions possible.
It is proof that art is not a charity. It is a business, where driven people will do whatever it takes to make a better product; to fix what is broken; to share in each other's success. All any good story needs is a chance to be told.
