Hello and Welcome
The Appropriate Team thanks you for your generosity. Your contribution will make this endeavor possible, inspiring change and provoking essential conversation. We are incredibly grateful for your support in this journey.
Art in Action
Appropriate confronts the burden of legacy and the histories we choose to forget. In recognition of this message, we’re donating all profits to the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund — the nation’s greatest effort to preserve and protect Black historic sites. At a time when Black American history is facing deliberate erasure, the work of the Action Fund ensures that Black stories, spaces, and contributions are not just remembered but rightfully honored. This fund embodies the urgent, ongoing work of confronting history with honesty — the heart of Appropriate. Click Here to Learn More About The Action Fund!
About the Play
Jacobs-Jenkins’s Appropriate paints a holistic picture of life, loss, and animosity. When the Lafayette family reunites to settle their late father's estate, they uncover a disturbing relic that shatters their illusions and forces them to confront the truths they've long avoided. Through unearthing legacies of racism and generational ignorance, Jacobs-Jenkins forces the audience and characters alike to reckon with the sting of betrayal — that of truth, of family, and of self. He urges us to look inward and question the inherent nature of humanity, begging the question: What warrants forgiveness?

A Note From Our Team
Our Director, Quamé J. Pierre, on the story -
“What I found was a family that felt both familiar and hauntingly nostalgic. Having grown up in the South with family dynamics not unlike those of the Lafayette clan, I experienced a strange duality: a sense of being both at home in this story and utterly alien in their conversations…The Lafayette home emits a kind of suffocating closeness, where every word, glance, and silence carries weight.”
Our Executive Producers, Halia Lindauer and Ryan Shanahan, on the significance -
“We’re living in a time of great turmoil, where conflict and frustration permeate the fabric of our society. History is up for debate. Truth is up for debate. America is teeming with resentment and uncertainty. ‘Appropriate’ embodies that rage, strikes a match, sets it ablaze, and dares you to look away.”
Thank you -
