In November 2020, my partner and I sold everything we had in the UK and bought a run down farm in Portugal.
The project was to build an equestrian centre where, alongside having paying liveries, I could rescue horses and also run courses for nervous people and horses to help them overcome their fears.
Sadly, ultimately the project had to be cancelled, and, in early 2024, we returned to the UK. Our farm is for sale, however all the while it doesn't sell, we are trying to keep up with the cost of the care of the five horses and mules we rescued in our time in Portugal. These - alongside our own personal horses - are now being cared for in Portugal while we try to rebuild here in the UK.
The Rescues
Mocca - a pony who had alredy had a foal by the time we rescued her at age 4.
Star - an unregistered lusitano cross, who had been tethered by a hobble around her fetlock and left so that the tether dug into her skin and flesh. She is pasture sound but we are not sure if she will ever be ridable.
Lissie - a very misunderstood and troubled mare, whose rehabilitation was progressing very well with us. We don't want to have to give up on her or pass her on to be someone else's worry.
Indiana, and Jones - our very nervous mules who have had some rough handling in the past and need their trust rebuilding.
How You Can Help
Bringing these five home to the UK is a high priority for us, but for now the main thing is to continue to keep them safe in Portugal until this can happen.
Each costs 318EUR (around £285 at time of writing) to keep per month. This includes all feed, hay and other routine care. This is a total of 1590EUR per month, around £1425.
In addition to the ongoing care costs, we have to raise £2200 per equine for the eventual transport, including all necessary paperwork costs. A total of £11000.
Once they are here, we can continue with their rehabilitation and our original project - just here in the UK instead.
Even if you can't help with a donation, we ask that you share our page with everyone you can.
