Hola, mi nombre es Yaxaira Chávez. Soy del estado de Chihuahua y tengo 38 años. Soy mamá de tres niños maravillosos: un joven de 14 años, otro de 10 y una niña de 9.

Mi vida cambió por completo el 11 de diciembre de 2021, cuando sufrí un accidente que me dejó una lesión medular en T6 y T7. Ese día mis pulmones se perforaron, dos costillas se rompieron y una de ellas se incrustó en mi médula espinal. En un instante dejé de sentir y mover mis piernas.

Desde entonces soy usuaria de silla de ruedas. Vivo con dolor crónico 24/7, espasticidad constante y muchas limitaciones que afectan mi vida diaria. Aun así, he seguido adelante por mis hijos, con toda la fuerza que puedo.

Este año, en febrero, enfrentamos otro golpe inesperado: el fallecimiento de mi esposo. Mis hijos y yo seguimos aprendiendo a vivir con su ausencia, buscando estabilidad y un camino que nos permita continuar.

Hoy, después de tres años de lucha, aparece una nueva esperanza: un tratamiento en Chicago, prometedor y respaldado por especialistas, que puede mejorar mi calidad de vida, darme mayor independencia y, sobre todo, ayudarme a reducir o eliminar el dolor neuropático que me limita cada día.

El costo del tratamiento es de $100,000 dólares, una cantidad que no puedo cubrir sola, pero que puede cambiar por completo mi vida y la de mis hijos.

Por eso abro este espacio, desde la vulnerabilidad pero también desde la esperanza.

Hello, my name is Yaxaira Chávez. I’m from the state of Chihuahua, México and I’m 38 years old. I’m the mother of three wonderful children: a 14-year-old, a 10-year-old, and a 9-year-old girl.

My life changed completely on December 11, 2021, when I had an accident that left me with a spinal cord injury at T6 and T7. That day, both of my lungs were punctured, two ribs broke, and one of them became lodged in my spinal cord. In just one moment, I lost all movement and sensation in my legs.

Since then, I’ve been a wheelchair user. I live with chronic pain 24/7, constant spasticity, and many limitations that affect my daily life. Even so, I’ve continued forward for my children, with all the strength I have.

This year, in February, we faced another unexpected hardship: the passing of my husband. My children and I are still learning how to live with his absence, seeking stability and a way to keep moving forward.

Today, after three years of fighting, a new hope has appeared: a treatment in Chicago, promising and backed by specialists, that could improve my quality of life, give me more independence, and most importantly, help reduce or eliminate the neuropathic pain that limits me every day.

The cost of this treatment is $100,000 USD, an amount I cannot cover on my own, but one that could completely change my life and my children’s lives.

That’s why I open this space—out of vulnerability, but also out of hope.
