Hello, my name is Sandra Medina. My family and I would appreciate a moment of your time to ask for help in gathering money to pay for my sister Andrea Medina’s medical expenses. I will try to explain our current situation as briefly and thoroughly as possible.
On the 2nd of October of 2020, our dad was deported to Mexico and our lives have changed drastically since that day. During the last week of January 2021, our dad tested positive for COVID-19 and had nobody to provide care for him during his quarantine. His age and medical conditions put him at risk for severe effects of COVID-19. My sisters Andrea and Daniela Medina immediately decided to take an emergency flight and traveled to Mexico to care for him during this time. While caring for our father, my sister Andrea developed a severe throat infection. Despite at home treatment with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications, the infection only worsened and began to spread. The infection/inflammation in her throat became so severe that she could not eat or drink, open her mouth, or move her head normally because it became too painful. Andrea spent days without eating or drinking and because she has Type 1 Diabetes (diagnosed at age 8), her blood sugar levels were extremely affected and she had to be rushed to a hospital in Guadalajara, Mexico for emergency treatment to avoid going into a diabetic coma. While in the hospital, the doctors ran many tests to determine the severity of her infection while also providing treatment for her diabetes. The medical team determined that the infection had become so severe that medication was no longer working and they would need to drain the infection and abscess surgically. During surgery the doctors found that the infection had spread to all of her throat and neck, her back, and chest; thankfully the doctors were able to drain the infection before it could reach her heart. Because of the severity of the infection, the doctors have scheduled two more surgeries to remove any infectious residue that may continue to form. My sister is currently still hospitalized with a tracheostomy tube in her throat and a nasogastric tube in her nose and undergoing treatment to maintain her diabetes at normal levels while managing the infection from flaring up again.
As the number of days my sister spends in the hospital increases, the amount of money that we owe in medical bills also increases. I understand that these have been very difficult times for all of us with everything going on in the world, but my sister’s life and health is priceless to us. That is why my family and I are asking for your kind donations, to help us cover the cost of the medical bills which keep adding up. My sister has always been such a strong girl with a beautiful and kind heart and has impacted the lives of many throughout her life. We are hoping that during this time, her childhood friends and teachers from our school Elizabeth Learning Center in Cudahy, her friends from Cal State University Los Angeles, and loved ones both in the U.S and Mexico, can find it in their hearts to make even the smallest donation in order to help Andrea focus on her recovery and healing. Hola, mi nombre es Sandra Medina. Mi familia y yo agradeceríamos un momento de su tiempo para pedir ayuda para reunir dinero y así poder pagar los gastos médicos de mi hermana Andrea Medina. Intentaré explicar nuestra situación actual de la forma más breve y completa posible.
El 2 de octubre de 2020, nuestro papá fue deportado a México y nuestras vidas han cambiado drásticamente desde ese día. Durante la última semana de enero de 2021, nuestro padre dio positivo por COVID-19 y no tenía a nadie que lo cuidara durante su cuarentena. Su edad y condiciones médicas lo pusieron en riesgo de sufrir efectos severos de COVID-19. Mis hermanas Andrea y Daniela Medina decidieron de inmediato tomar un vuelo de emergencia y viajaron a México para cuidarlo durante este tiempo. Mientras cuidaban a nuestro padre, mi hermana Andrea desarrolló una grave infección en la garganta. A pesar del tratamiento en el hogar con antibióticos y medicamentos antiinflamatorios, la infección solo empeoró y comenzó a extenderse. La infección y la inflamación en su garganta se volvieron tan severas que no podía comer ni beber, abrir la boca o mover la cabeza normalmente porque le dolía demasiado. Andrea pasó días sin comer ni beber y debido a que tiene diabetes tipo 1 (diagnosticada a los 8 años), sus niveles de azúcar en la sangre se vieron extremadamente afectados y tuvo que ser trasladada de urgencia a un hospital en Guadalajara, México para recibir tratamiento de emergencia para evitar un coma diabetico. Mientras estaba en el hospital, los médicos realizaron muchas pruebas para determinar la gravedad de su infección y, al mismo tiempo, le brindaron tratamiento para su diabetes. El equipo médico determinó que la infección se había vuelto tan grave que la medicación ya no funcionaba y que necesitarían drenar la infección y el absceso quirúrgicamente. Durante la cirugía, los médicos descubrieron que la infección se había extendido a toda su garganta y cuello, espalda y pecho; afortunadamente, los médicos pudieron drenar la infección antes de que pudiera llegar a su corazón. Debido a la gravedad de la infección, los médicos han programado dos cirugías más para eliminar cualquier residuo infeccioso que pueda seguir formándose. Mi hermana sigue hospitalizada con un tubo de traqueotomía en la garganta y un tubo nasogástrico en la nariz y está recibiendo tratamiento para mantener su diabetes en niveles normales mientras controlan que la infección no vuelva a estallar.
A medida que aumenta el número de días que mi hermana pasa en el hospital, también aumenta la cantidad de dinero que debemos en facturas médicas. Entiendo que estos han sido tiempos muy difíciles para todos, con todo lo que sucede en el mundo, pero la vida y la salud de mi hermana no tienen precio para nosotros. Es por eso que mi familia y yo estamos solicitando sus amables donaciones, para ayudarnos a cubrir el costo de las facturas médicas que siguen aumentando. Mi hermana siempre ha sido una niña muy fuerte con un corazón bueno y amable y ha impactado la vida de muchos a lo largo de su vida. Esperamos que durante este tiempo, sus amigo/as de la infancia y maestro/as de primaria a preparatoria de la escuela Elizabeth Learning Center en Cudahy, sus amigos de California State University of Los Angeles y sus seres queridos tanto en los Estados Unidos como en México, puedan encontrar en sus corazones hacer incluso la más pequeña donación para poder ayudar a pagar los gastos médicos, y que así Andrea pueda concentrarse en su recuperación y curación.
