As some of you know, Ted Wells met a young woman in Uganda who had been raised in an orphanage, and who was trying to become a lawyer in order to help others like herself. The woman was also a single mother, raising two boys. Both of her sons had sickle cell anemia, one of them has since died.
Ted was moved by her story and decided to support her effort to be come a lawyer. He also helped her with therapy for her sons. In Uganda hospitals do not treat until money is paid up front.
Ted called her Apio (Apio Betty Inyoin). She has since completed undergraduate school. I believe she has finished her masters course work and has just her thesis to finish.
Prior his death in August Ted had been sending her $700 USD per month. At hearing of Ted's death Apio wrote a heart felt tribute to Ted and his help.
On January 5th I received an email from Apio in Uganda titled ;
WE NEED YO URGENT HELP, PLEASE. It read;
"Greetings from Uganda;
hope this email finds you well, we're okay too.
It's almost 5 months since we lost Ted, his gone & it's still very hard for us to digest & accept yet here we're with no power to reverse nothing, we know that it ain't easy for any of you either.
A few hours ago our landlord asked us to step out for a minute to talk & she locked the house without warning, she never allowed us to pick nothing in the house, she says we're getting nothing until our rent, power & water are cleared to zero balance, my academic documents, travel documents, laptop, phone, everything is trapped in the house, we have no choice but head for the village, we have debts at the food selling stores that we've accumulated overtime.
I'm writing this to please beg for yo help to please help us clear our debts, we will figure out the rest just help us clear the debts, rent 2,000 dollars, food 1,200 dollars, medical bills 1000 dollars (pay directly to the hospital).
You may not know us that much but please help us."
Jeff Jacobs and I are working on trying to send her and her son some money, as soon as we figure out how to successfully transfer fund to her bank account. Jeff intends to send $2000 USD so that she can recover her things from the apartment.
She needs a total of approximately $4200 to get her back to $0 debt.
I would like to raise a total of $5500 to be added to Jeff's contribution, in order that she may complete her masters and get treatment for her son when needed. (Attacks are very painful).
Ted told me several years ago that if something happened to him, he wanted Apio to be taken care of. I intend to do what I am able ($500).
Helping out Apio will not just be aiding her and her son. It will also allow her to complete her masters and begin employment to help her community.
