Matt Mastracci's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
On the afternoon of October 4th, we were faced with one of the most terrifying days we have experienced. Matt’s girlfriend Kirsten came home to find Matt having chest & arm pains and shortness of breath.  Kirsten drove Matt to the emergency room at Beaumont Hospital where it was quickly discovered that Matt was having a severe heart attack.

Matt was immediately rushed to the cath lab for an emergency procedure. After going into cardiac arrest, the incredible cardiology team was able to bring Matt back with a combination of manual compressions and an electric defibrillator, and placed a stent in his left anterior descending artery (LAD) to restore blood flow to his heart. If you know Matt well, you know he is as bull-headed as they come, and he wasn't going to let a widow maker heart attack take him down. As he keeps saying – “wait until you see my next trick!”

Matt spent about 48 hours in the cardiac ICU, while his vitals were monitored and numerous tests were completed. While there are still many unknowns, it appears that the primary cause was genetics; if you were to look at his bloodwork (cholesterol, blood sugars, blood pressure), you would think he was in for a broken arm.

Coming home has brought many challenges. Matt’s limitations include adhering to a new diet, mobility changes, a range of new medications, minimizing stress, and many other significant lifestyle changes.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t discovered that Matt's health insurance was terminated earlier this summer until this happened. As I’m sure you can imagine, there is still a large financial gap.  While we are working to find a resolution moving forward, finding ways to address the hospital expenses is hard to do without adding additional stress.

No one ever imagines or expects to experience something like this at such a young age, and the recovery process is bound to be trying. If you can find it in your heart to help contribute to Matt's cause, to lighten the burden of this beyond stressful nightmare, your graciousness is more than appreciated.
