Aoide (pronounced ay -oi -dee) - the Greek muse of voice and song
About us:
With performances described as “the best choral singing we’ve ever heard in Bozeman (or almost anywhere),” the Aoide Chamber Singers have established themselves as one of Montana’s premier chamber choirs. Founded in the fall of 2012 at Montana State University by a small group of friends, Aoide's distinctive sound and high level of artistry drew attention from others and membership quickly expanded. Aoide has a keen interest in curating music by living composers and a strong commitment to the sense of place that Montana has given us.
Sought-after for collaborations, Aoide has appeared twice with Grammy-Award winning choir The Crossing and with the Jitro Czech Children's Choir. Aoide has performed across Montana in venues including Tippett Rise with the MSU Honors College Musicale, annually at the Big Sky Chapel presented by the Big Sky Arts Council, in Red Lodge as part of Music from the Beartooths, at the Bozeman Public Library as part of the Montana Chamber Music Society's Noon Notes program for elementary students, as the chorus of a contemporary chamber opera at the Warren Miller Performing Arts Center in Big Sky, at First Presbyterian Church of Bozeman as part of their Mainly Music season, and in concert in Missoula, Kalispell, and Helena.
About our project:
Our winter performances this year feature Joby Talbot's epic musical pilgrimage Path of Miracles, a concert-length work which follows the physical, emotional, and spiritual journey of travelers on the 500 mile Camino de Santiago. Each of the four movements is named for a cathedral, the major staging posts along the way, concluding when "they cast into the sea at Finistere" as the pilgrim repeats prayers to St. James in celebration of the end of the journey and the beginning of a new life.
The libretto includes selections from medieval manuscripts and Roman Catholic liturgy and is sung in Greek, Latin, Spanish, Basque, French, English and German. The music incorporates styles ranging from Pasiputput of the Taiwanese Bunun people to the pilgrim’s hymn 'Dum Pater Familias' - all set within a postminimalist musical framework.
Our performances of Path of Miracles will take place Friday, December 20 at 7:30 pm at the Big Sky Chapel and Saturday, December 21 at 7:30 pm in Holy Rosary Church of Bozeman.
What will your money go towards?
Putting on a concert like this is not easy; it takes hundreds of hours of rehearsal collectively and enormous amounts of energy from the conductor and singers alike. We will be presenting this concert with a full chamber choir of 28 virtuosic singers, many of who will be traveling to Bozeman specifically for this project.
In order to ensure that this ambitious undertaking is a success, and to expand our mission of bringing the highest quality choral music to Montana in the upcoming year, we need your support.
Your donation will help to:
1. Pay our singers a nominal fee for their time, preparation, and for working tirelessly to bring this music to life.
2. Offset the travel costs of singers who now live in places as varied as Boston, Ithaca, St. Louis, Seattle, Chicago, New Mexico, Idaho, and across Montana.
3. Secure rehearsal spaces and performance venues.
Why support us? What makes us unique?
Aoide's unique sound has been cultivated from a grassroots effort and a diverse membership including professional musicians as well as nurses, engineers, teachers, and students, among others. What unifies us is our passion for creating art together - an increasingly challenging task as our careers and lives have separated us. We need your support to continue bringing this art to Montana, a geography and sense of place integral to the ensemble's fabric.
Upcoming projects include collaborations with the Jitro Czech Children's Choir and a juxtaposition of Bach, contemporary music, and ballet with the James Sewell Ballet Company of Minneapolis.
