Friends of the Anxiety Disorders Residential Unit

Over the summer, I was lucky enough to work as a placement student at the Anxiety Disorders Residential Unit (ADRU). ADRU is a highly specialised service, primarily treating individuals with OCD and BDD. The programme is 16-weeks and involves intensive cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP).

I have been astounded by the compassion and care demonstrated by the staff on the ward and the positive impact this has on the patients. Both residents and their families have emphasised how amazing and unique this service is, providing so many individuals with the chance to regain their independence by bravely challenging their anxieties.

Battling an anxiety disorder is extremely isolating, but ADRU provides a space which prioritises ‘meeting your courage with compassion'. I’ve been through various services myself as a patient, and it is so refreshing to see a service provide such a sense of community and empowerment. The team all look out for each other, which is so important in such a tough field. Everyone works so hard to enable residents to take charge in their recovery, and it is truly inspiring. Therefore, I would like to raise money for the Friends of ADRU charity by running 'the big half' on September 7th. All funds will go towards the service.

'FADRU has a specific purpose to benefit patients at the Anxiety Disorders Residential Unit at the Bethlem Royal Hospital, Beckenham, Kent. It may also assist in the training and education of staff at the unit. We raise funds by donations and from charitable trusts'.
