Antonio Solís — Deliverista Injury Fund

Donation protected
Dear neighbors and friends,

I am usually helping other Deliveristas in times of emergency, but this time I find myself in difficult situation that has led me to seek for support for myself.

My name is Antonio Solís, a  leader of Los Deliveristas Unidos, a Deliverista from Astoria, a proud neighbor of Astoria, Queens and the father of beautiful daughter — who is the engine of my life.

I take a enormous amount of pride in the work I do a delivery worker in New York City. I am part of entire community that keeps New Yorkers safe and safe in times of emergencies or natural disasters. We do this job to provide a better life to our families. In my case, I work hard to be able to pay the college of my daughter so she can have the opportunities that I did not get growing up because my family was too poor.

Our labor as Deliveristas is essential but unprotected. We work as workers, but are not treated as workers by the big companies like DoorDash, Uber and grubhub. For instance, two weeks I got hit by car that was double parked while I was doing delivery for DoorDash. I was taken to the hospital and since then I haven’t been able to work and still recovering from my injuries.

For two weeks, I have been at home recovering from injuries without a pay or any support from the company that I was working for. Also, as independent contractors, we have limited options and no rights in times like this. I happen to be struggling to cover my medical expenses, my rent, the college tuition of my daughter and without money to fix my fix my bike, which is my main tool of work.

Because the apps don’t take any responsibility on support me, I am force to create this injury fund to raise $5,000 to be able to get by for this month.

I hate asking for money, but I am left with no other choice. Any support is welcome and very much appreciated your solidarity. My dream is that we don’t have to rely on charity to recover for accidents or injuries that we are exposed because of the work we do, but the apps take the responsibility to support their workers like me. This is why as soon I recover, I will keep organizing and fighting to make delivery work, a profession that is respected and protected.

Again, thank for reading this and supporting me!

Sincerely,

Toño,
