For our friend, Antonio Avalos (Tonio)

Our dear friend Antonio,

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of an amazing son, brother, uncle, friend, and human, Antonio Avalos.

Antonio was born in Tabasco, Mexico, the eldest male of 7 siblings, and lived his early life in a small coastal town. Upon adolescence, he decided to leave home for the big city, Mexico City, to embark on what would be a long career in the military.

Antonio lived his life full force, and would never settle for mediocrity. With this tenacity, he excelled in the Mexican army as a paratrooper and eventually top ranking commander. The self-discipline that he developed during that time, paired with his lifelong qualities of determination, adventure, and fun, led him to set his sights on coming to the United States, where he landed in his longtime home of San Francisco. With his vibrant personality and strong desire to help others, he eventually acquired employment at Hermanos De Luna y Sol: A non profit organization helping gay/ bisexual Spanish speaking Latino men disproportionately affected by the AIDS epidemic, establishing himself professionally as a pilar in his community that effectively resourced health, housing, and legal services for underserved populations.

Antonio found a strong sense of purpose in helping others and also dedicated his personal time to being of service. In this terrible tragedy and shared grief, we’ve been fortunate to hear great stories of people he helped; ranging from clients he went above and beyond for, to random friends of friends he would meet and help with their US citizenship (he never worked for any US embassy, he would assist from his own knowledge).

If you’ve met Antonio even once, you felt his joyous and beautiful presence. He was friendly, compassionate, and had an innate empathy for others far beyond anyone we’ve ever met. He would not only empathize but always try and help anyone who crossed his path; whether a stranger or a friend.

Because of Antonio’s well known generosity, we have been approached to provide a space where friends and loved ones may reciprocate. This GoFundMe will go directly to Antonio’s family to aid in funeral services and delivering his body safely to his beloved homeland of Mexico, where he wished to be laid to rest.

Con gran tristeza anunciamos el fallecimiento de un increíble hijo, hermano, tío, amigo y ser humano, Antonio Ávalos.

Antonio nació en Tabasco, México, el mayor de 7 hermanos, y vivió sus primeros años de vida en un pequeño pueblo costero. Al llegar a la adolescencia, decidió dejar su hogar hacia la gran ciudad, Ciudad de México, para embarcarse en lo que sería una larga carrera en el ejército.

Antonio vivió su vida con gran energía y ​​nunca se conformó con la mediocridad. Con su tenacidad, se destacó en el ejército mexicano como paracaidista y, finalmente, como comandante de alto rango. La autodisciplina que desarrolló durante ese tiempo, combinada con sus cualidades de determinación, aventura y diversión de toda la vida, lo llevaron a fijar su mirada en venir a los Estados Unidos, donde aterrizó en San Francisco, su hogar de muchos años. Con su personalidad vibrante y su fuerte deseo de ayudar a los demás, finalmente consiguió empleo en Hermanos De Luna y Sol: una organización sin fines de lucro que ayuda a hombres latinos hispanohablantes homosexuales/bisexuales afectados desproporcionadamente por la epidemia del SIDA, estableciéndose profesionalmente como un fuerte recurso en su comunidad que proporcionó asistencia efectivos para servicios de salud, vivienda y legales para poblaciones desatendidas.

Antonio encontró un fuerte sentido de propósito al ayudar a los demás y también dedicó su tiempo personal a servir. En esta terrible tragedia y dolor compartido, hemos tenido la suerte de escuchar grandes historias de personas a las que ayudó; desde clientes por los que hizo todo lo posible hasta amigos y conocidos a los quienes ayudó adquirir su ciudadanía estadounidense (nunca trabajó para un embajada de EEUU, ayudaba según su propio conocimiento).

Si conociste a Antonio aunque sea una vez, sentiste su alegre y hermosa presencia. Era amigable, compasivo y tenía una empatía innata por los demás mucho mayor que cualquier persona que hayamos conocido. No es que sólo sentía empatía sino que siempre intentaba ayudar a cualquiera que se cruzara en su camino; ya sea un amigo o un extraño.

Debido a la conocida generosidad de Antonio, se nos ha contactado para brindar un espacio donde amigos y seres queridos puedan corresponder. Este fondo de ayuda irá directamente a la familia de Antonio para ayudar en los servicios funerarios y entregar su cuerpo de manera segura a su amada tierra natal de México, donde deseaba descansar.
