Antiracist Literature for KHS

Donation protected
Day by day, the talented and dedicated educators at Kennebunk High School  are working to help each and every student grow into talented, compassionate adults. However, our community has suffered from some blind spots. The goal of this campaign is to purchase a copy of "Stamped Racism Antiracism and You " by Jason Reynolds for every student at the school.

This extraordinary book tells the history of racism from creation to modern day in language that is uniquely accessible to teenagers. By giving them a background in how racism has developed, we hope to help them identify racism when they encounter it in their own lives and act as antiracists. Beyond this, we hope that this book will inspire conversations at the dinner table, among friends, and throughout the community at large.

On top of all of this, by giving the students a book without accompanying homework, we are inviting them into the adult community of learners. We are reinforcing the community's interest in lifelong learning and breaking the discussion of social responsibility away from the rigid curriculum.

The young people of Kennebunk, Arundel, and Kennebunkport are our most precious and valuable resource, and the hope for the continued prosperity of the three towns. We also look forward to seeing some venture out and take on even wider roles in the country and world. This investment is simply a seed.

I am seeking $9,000 to purchase 750 copies of the book at an estimated $12 per copy. If more money is received, more copies will be purchased and distributed.

I will be donating the books directly to the KHS Civil Rights Team  and giving them responsibility for figuring out the actual physical distribution.

Finally, I am committed to placing the final book order with a Black-owned bookstore. All such bookstores are currently overwhelmed with orders, so I will update this campaign page with more information once I am able.

Ideally, we will distribute the books on the first day of school, September 1, 2020. This date may have to change based on order fulfillment and social distancing requirements.

Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to read this and considering donating. Not every copy will change a life, but every attempt counts. This community believes in the inherent value of every human life and we have work to do to ensure that that value is born out.
