"No one becomes “not racist,” despite a tendency by Americans to identify themselves that way. We can only strive to be “antiracist” on a daily basis, to continually rededicate ourselves to the lifelong task of overcoming our country’s racist heritage." - Ibram X. Kendi
Following the murders of Ahmed Aubrey, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd in the last several months and countless others in the recent past, continued discussions around race and racism are desperately needed. One of the many ways that we can begin to shift society's perspective on race and work against the systemic racism that infiltrates American society is to educate ourselves about race, diversity, and inclusion.
There are so many powerful, necessary books about antiracism, yet few are available through my local library in Sparta. I’m raising money to help purchase a selection of antiracism books for children, teens, and adults to continue the conversation here in Alleghany County. All books purchased will be given to the Alleghany County Public Library.
Some of my suggestions include:
- So You Want to Talk About Race? by Ijeoma Oluo
- How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi
- Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness by Austin Channing Brown
- Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi
- Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah
- The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson
- Happy in Our Skin by Fran Manushkin
- This Book is Antiracist by Tiffany Jewell
- Not My Idea: A Book About Whiteness by Anastasia Higgenbotham
- Antiracist Baby by Ibram X. Kendi
All donations and shares of this fundraiser are deeply appreciated!
