This is a collaborative anti-gang initiative between the Give Back Organization, North Carolina State University’s Computer Science Department, Raleigh Police Department and the City of Raleigh. The initiative is designed to capitalize off the younger generation’s love of video games in order to provide at risk youth an opportunity to develop a tangible skill. It is the hope of the collaborative that the kids involved will choose Games Over Gangs.
The program is designed to remove the kids from their environment for 8hrs a day for six weeks while they work hand and hand with grad students and Professors from NC State. The kids will learn about computer coding, game development and app development all of which are skills that can help elevate them out of their current situation. Through utilizing the skills they learn each participant is going to be challenged with identifying and coming up with a solution to a problem they identified in their neighborhood. At the culmination of the six weeks the participants will present their problem and solutions using their newly learned skills.
Throughout the duration of the program volunteers will be welcome during breakfast and lunch periods to provide mentorship or just come and hang out with the kids. It is imperative that the kids see they are not bound to their current situation and there is a way out if they choose GAMES OVER GANGS!!!
