A little over two months ago Anthony and our family life changed forever. Anthony was treating a cut on his left big toe with neosporin but it was not healing. Anthony is an diabetic and when a diabetic gets a cut it could take longer than the norm for it to heal. I noticed his big toe and recommended that he go have it checked because it didn't look good. He had already been to the emergency room twice because of a persistent fever and being nauseated. The third time he went he showed them his toe and that is where this journey begins. They told us initially that they would have to cut two of Anthony's toes off because gangrene had set in and there was nothing they could do. Once the surgeon went to cut the two toes he saw that it was worse than just the two toes. After the surgery the surgeon stated that he needed to consult with another doctor and they would try to save the foot if they could. He consulted with the other doctor and both confirmed that there was nothing that could be done and that a below the knee amputation would need to be done or Anthony would get very sick and die. There was nothing else that needed to be said...Below the knee amputation it will be. Anthony has long legs so all that they amputated was up to the ankle. Then the physical healing started. He had one mishap and busted every staple almost out and had to return to the hospital for them to stitch and staple it back up to start the healing process again. All in all Anthony spent almost a month in the hospital. Friday, October 19, he went to the doctor and they took out his stitches and staples. Now he can get ready to be fitted for a prosthetic leg. Anthony does not have insurance and we have been told that he cannot receive Medicad if he is going to get a prosthetic leg but I did the Medicad application anyway. We have been told that prices for the leg varies but Anthony is a big guy so we know it will start no lower than $8,000. Please, whatever you can do to help us get my brother his prosthetic leg would be very much appreciated. God Bless you all!
